A state-approved site in Schuyler for a new Herkimer County jail has some officials concerned about transportation costs and others excited about the potential for economic development.

Meanwhile, five sites in Herkimer still are receiving consideration.

Herkimer County Legislator Jeffrey Stone, R-Ilion, said all advantages and disadvantages need to be considered for the Schuyler site and any sites Herkimer officials might approve.

“This is a lifetime decision for us,” Stone said. “I'll have to answer for this the rest of my life.”

The state Commission of Correction on Tuesday unanimously approved a site adjacent to the Schuyler Business Park off Route 5 as a feasible location for the new, state-mandated jail.

County officials have said further studies and a public meeting will take place before the entire county legislature would vote to approve the site.

Commission officials have given the county a September deadline for submitting site-specific drawings and being ready to go to bid, County Administrator James Wallace said.
