Wabasso Rabbits trounce St. James Area Saints for first football victory

Racking up 312 yards on the ground, the Wabasso Rabbits rolled to a 40-8 victory over visiting St. James Area Friday, Oct. 15, in a non-conference match-up held in Wabasso.

The Rabbits (1-6) picked up their first win of the season by controlling the game on the ground and limiting St. James Area to just 37 yards of total offense (-4 yards rushing).

A 3-yard touchdown run from Wyatt Soupir put the Rabbits up 7-0 after one quarter of play. Jayden Goblish would add a 7-yard touchdown run and Adryen Tietz connected with Goblish on a 15-yard touchdown strike to give the home team a 21-0 lead at the break.

The domination continued in the third quarter as Soupir scored from 13-yards out and Boston Brand added a 4-yard touchdown run to make it 33-0.

With the game winding down, Calvin Hanna scored on a 10-yard run and Noah Anderson made it a perfect 4-for-4 on the night on extra points, to make it 40-0.

The Saints only points came on a 75-yard kick-off return.

Wabasso finished with 21 first downs compared to just four for the Saints and caused three Saints turnovers while staying turnover free themselves.

Soupir had a big night, rushing 24 times for 197 yards and two scores. Goblish had 10 carries for 88 yards and a touchdown and also added one reception for 15 yards and a score. Hanna added five carries for 34 yards and a touchdown. Brand had four carries for 14 yards and a score and Tietz was 1-of-3 passing for 15 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively the Rabbits were led by Brand with eight tackles (three solo). Goblish had six tackles and a tackle for loss and Sam Welch added six tackles. Soupir had two tackles and an interception and Devlin Wagner had four tackles.

The Rabbits wrapped up the regular season on Wednesday night at New Ulm Cathedral (after this Gazette was printed) and will open up the Section 3A postseason on Tuesday, Oct. 26.
