Douglas Ray Nolte, 68, rural Fertile, MN, died Wednesday, November 2, 2016, at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND.  He was born on May 11, 1948, to Orvis and Verna (Gullickson) Nolte in Crookston, MN.  Doug attended the Fertile-Beltrami School District, graduating in 1966.  Following high school, Doug attended UND for three years.  While in college, he joined the North Dakota National Guard, serving from 1969 to 1975.

On September 13, 1968, Doug was united in marriage to Marty Holmvik at Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile.  They returned to the home farm in 1971, where Doug spent many years growing crops with his father, uncle Walter and brother Greg.  In 1995, Doug began working at New Fly'er Bus Manufacturing as an electrician in Crookston.  He retired in 2013.

Over the years, Doug served as an active member of the Liberty Township Board, Beltrami Elevator Board of Directors, on the Concordia Lutheran Church Council and as President, and presently serving on the Leadership Board at Hope Evangelical Free Church.  Doug was a member of the Fertile Flying Club.

Doug enjoyed farming—planting crops, repairing machinery, and harvesting.  He took pride keeping up his yard and gardening vegetables.  Airplanes, big and small, intrigued Doug. He built small model airplanes, flew Remote Control Planes and earned a pilot’s licenses to fly real airplanes!  Doug also enjoyed flying his UltraLite Plane.  His sense of humor always created a joyful spirit.  Doug’s steadiness allowed him to lead those around him, endure the trials of life, and created a secure home for his family.  He was a man of quiet, steady faith that was reflected in all he did.  Family life was Doug’s treasure, especially his granddaughters.

Doug is survived by his wife, Marty, Fertile; four children: Teresa (Peter Kelley) Nolte, St. Paul, MN; Chris, Fertile; Carter (“Doda” Camille), Beltrami, MN; and Jessica Nolte, St. Paul, MN; four granddaughters: Jenna Kelley, Hailey Nolte, Olivia Kelley, and Stella Nolte; two sisters: Cathy (Robert) Franck, Ashby, MN; and Marsha Stellrecht, Moorhead, MN; several cousins, nephews and nieces.  He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Greg and an infant, Craig.
