Food insecurity is a growing issue across the United States, and people in the Redwood area are not immune to it.
According to Cindy Mumme of the Redwood Area Food Shelf, in 2019 the local, non-profit organization served more than 1,300 households and in excess of 4,300 individuals and provided 100,000 pounds of food to people in need.
March is food shelf month, and during the annual campaign food shelf organizations focus attention on the needs which are being met as well as the ongoing demand that exists.
The public is being encouraged to make donations during the month of March, as part of what has become the largest grassroots food and fund drive in the state.
There are nearly 300 food shelf organizations across Minnesota.
The Redwood Area Food Shelf, located in Redwood Falls, is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. and the first Saturday of each month from 8-10 a.m. One may drop off donations during those hours, or call the food shelf at (507) 627-5106 to learn more about getting involved.

What follows is a letter from Cindy Mumme of the Redwood Area Food Shelf:
Yes, it’s that time again.
The Minnesota FoodShare March Campaign began March 1.
Being the largest food drive in Minnesota, we at the Redwood Area Food Shelf are excited to be a part of it.
We have been busy this past year. We served 1,370 households, 4,388 individuals and distributed 100,360 pounds of food. We are able to help families eat healthy, as we have fresh fruits and vegetables plus dairy products, eggs, milk and cheese. This is a great time to help the food shelf, as more money and pounds of food received as donations during the month of March will ensure that the Redwood Area Food Shelf will receive a check reflecting the amount you as donors gave during the campaign.
All of the money and food products stay right here enabling us to continue to stock our shelves. We appreciate any and all donations. You can mail them to: Redwood Area Food Shelf, 231 East Second Street, #4, Redwood Falls, MN, 56283, or you can stop and drop it off.
We would love to show you around.
We are open Tuesdays and Thursday from 9 a.m. until noon and the first Saturday of the month from 8-10 a.m. You can also call me at (507) 627-5106, or visit us on Facebook.
Our mission to feed people in need would not be possible without people like you.
Thank you for opening your heart and helping your fellow man. That’s why we’re here.
