Pulling away late in the second half the Redwood Valley girls basketball team defeated visiting Windom Area 66-51 Thursday night in a Big South Conference West showdown.
After struggling against Worthington the Cardinals (14-5) got back on track on their home court against the Eagles (10-9) to improve to 7-3 overall in Big South Conference play (good for second place behind Marshall).
Sophomore Sydney Sommers led the way with 22 points, Haley Garman added 14 and Caitlyn Johnson 10. Bri Panitzke chipped in with nine points, Leah Irlbeck added six, Hannah Schjenken three and Aubree Hicks two. The Cardinals trailed by as many as five in the second half before pulling away in the final nine minutes of play.
The win improves the Cardinals to 7-1 overall against Section 3AA opponents, and they currently sit tied atop the South standings with Martin County West (13-4) with identical QRF rankings. Eden Valley-Watkins (18-0), New London/Spicer (13-5), Litchfield (12-7) and Morris Area/CA (10-5) are the top four seeds in the North half of the Section bracket.
