Garman nets 30 after setting school record with 39 in win over Worthington

Pulling away in the second half the Redwood Valley girls basketball team improved to 3-0 (2-0) on the season with a 52-43 home win over Pipestone Area Thursday night in a Big South Conference boy/girl doubleheader.

It was another huge night for sophomore Haley Garman as she finished 14-of-15 from the floor and 2-for-3 from the charity stripe to finish with a game-high 30 points, six rebounds and three steals. Through three games the talented post player is averaging 28 points a night and recently established a school record with 39 in the Cards win over Worthington.

“I’m really proud of Haley for setting the school record,” Coach Taya Kockelman said, “She is the kind of kid every coach wants on their team. She is very driven, focused and works hard in everything she does.”

The Cardinals jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead on eight points from Garman but the Arrows would answer back on a 13-3 run to take a 15-13 lead with just over seven minutes to play in the first half. The Cards would answer back and close out the half on a 12-6 run to take a 25-21 lead into the break.

The second half got off to a slow start offensively but the Cardinals would eventually feed the ball into Garman and she would finish with 17 of her 30 points in the second half to lead the Cards to the win.

Sophomore Sydney Sommers also finished in double figures with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Senior Caitlyn Johnson knocked down a first-half three, Aubree Hicks added two points, three rebounds and two steals, Amy Martius had two points and two steals and Leah Irlbeck had two points and three rebounds.

The Cardinal will host Marshall in a big early season conference match-up Tuesday night.

The Redwood Valley boys basketball team got a big outing from standout Cole Woodford and would roll to a 71-52 victory over the Arrows to complete the twinbill sweep.

Woodford knocked down five three’s and was 7-of-8 from the charity stripe on the way to a season-high 38 points. He also added six rebounds, four steals and three assists. Collin Wells went 3-of-4 from long range to finish with 14 points and an assist and Connor Josephson had six poitns, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Carter Guetter chipped in with four points and Alex Lang had three points and three assists.

The Cards travel to Marshall Tuesday.
