Redwood Valley stays unbeaten with shutout victory over Windom Area
A dominating regular season came to a close for the Redwood Valley football team Wednesday night at home against Martin County West. Friday night, the Cardinals (7-0) dominated winless Windom Area (0-7) 35-0 for their fourth shutout victory of the season.
The Cardinals racked up a whopping 493 yards of total offense while allowing just44 to the Eagles. Redwood Valley – the South Central (White) District champs – will head into the Section 3AA postseason ranked fourth overall in Class AA and will have a first round bye and will play again a week from Saturday.
Despite an odd first half, the Cardinals took a 20-0 lead into the break thanks to a pair of late second quarter touchdowns. The Cards cracked the scoreboard midway through the first quarter when Jordan Mertens blocked a punt and then recovered it and dove into the end zone for the touchdown. Jed Hansen converted the two-point conversion and it was 8-0 Cards.
The Eagles – who played tough for most of the first half – had a great opportunity to get on the board midway through the second quarter. With the Cards driving, Alex Louwagie was hit and his pass intercepted on the 15-yard line and returned 80-yards to the Cardinal five. The impressive Cardinal defense would not allow a single yard on the ensuing four plays, and the Eagles would turn the ball over on downs.
The Cards then responded with a 12-play, 94 yard drive that included four completions for 76 yards from Louwagie to Woodford culminating in a six-yard touchdown strike that made it 14-0. With just a minute remaining in the half, the Eagles tried to work it down the field, but Woodford would come up with his ninth interception of the season and the Cards would score again to end the half. Adam Bommersbach rumbled 57-yards to the Eagle five, and Logan Prouty then took it in from five yards out.
The Cards would score twice more in the second half, as Prouty plunged in from two yards out and Matthew Muetzel scored on a 20-yard run.
The Cards racked up 333 yards on the ground, led by Bommersbach with eight carries for 123 yards. Prouty added 19 carries for 97 yards and two scores, and Louwagie had four carries for 37 yards. Jaxon Lang had two carries for 25 yards, Muetzel added two carries for 27 yards and Luke Grannes had one carry for 15 yards. Louwagie was 9-of-14 passing for 134 yards and a touchdown, and Colin Wells was 1-for-2 for 26 yards. Woodford hauled in seven receptions for 124 yards and a score, Carter Guetter had one catch for 26 yards and Kyle Huhnerkoch had two catches for 10 yards.
The Cardinal defense was dominating once again, allowing just four first downs and nine yards rushing. Prouty had five tackles and two tackles-for-loss, Tayte Harazin added five tackles and a tackle-for-loss, Michael Mace and Kaleb Haase both had three tackles and a tackle-for-loss. Jed Hansen picked off a pair of passes, and Woodford added one.
