Woodford hauls in a pair of touchdown passes in Redwood Valley's 21-0 win over Blue Earth Area

A bend-but-not-break defense coupled with an opportunistic offense helped Redwood Valley roll to a 21-0 shutout of visiting Blue Earth Area Friday night at Inglis Field.

Senior Cole Woodford hauled in a pair of touchdown receptions and fellow senior Alex Louwagie looked good under center in his first start throwing a pair of TD’s and rushing for another in the win.

The victory catapults the Cardinals to 2-0 overall on the young season heading into a battle with rival Luverne Friday night. Luverne is 0-2 but has had two tough early games losing 28-12 to Maple River and 33-0 to Jackson Co. Central.

The Cardinal defense came up big on the Bucs first possession, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Adam Bommersbach on the Blue Earth 26-yard line. On the Cards first offensive play of the game, Louwagie would throw a fade down the left sideline that was caught by Woodford for a touchdown to give the Cards an early 7-0 lead.

In the second quarter, the Cards got another big play from Woodford as he took the pitch from Louwagie and threw it 31-yards to Kyle Huhnerkoch to put the Cards in business at the Blue Earth 30-yard line. Logan Prouty would scamper 17-yards to the 13-yard line and runs by Carter Johnson and Louwagie moved the ball to the 1-yard line. From there, Louwagie would plunge in for the touchdown and Stian Vraalstad (who is perfect on extra points this season) would tack on the extra point to put the Cards up 14-0 at the half.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Cards would apply the dagger as Louwagie connected with Woodford on a 19-yard touchdown strike to close out the scoring.

Defensively the Cardinals gave up some yards but came up with the big defensive stops when they needed them and were plus-3 in the turnover department, including a pair of INT’s from Woodford who now has four on the season.

Blue Earth - who went 0-for-3 in redzone possessions - finished with 20 first downs to just 10 for the Cards and had 273 yards of total offense (195 rushing) compared to 209 for the Cards (125 passing).

Louwagie would finish 7-of-12 passing for 94 yards and two touchdowns and added 10 yards rushing and a score. Woodford hauled in seven catches for 94 yards and two scores and was 1-for-1 passing for 31 yards. Prouty had seven carries for 37 yards, Omar Arredondo added five carries for 19 yards, Jaxon Lang had three carries for 12 yards and Johnson had three carries for nine yards. Huhnerkoch had one catch for 31 yards.

Tayte Harazin had a big game defensively from his cornerback position, racking up 17 tackles including 10 solo. Huhnerkoch had eight tackles (four solo), Connor Josephson added eight tackles (three solo), Chad Maddock had six tackles (four solo) and two tackles-for-loss and Prouty added six tackles (three solo) and two tackles-for-loss. Bommersbach had three tackles, a tackle-for-loss and a fumble recovery, Woodford added five tackles and two INT’s and Lang finished with five tackles (two solo). Matthew Muetzel chipped in with five assisted tackles and was efficient putting pressure on the quarterback from his right end position.

The Cardinals were without two key players Friday night in Corbin Wabasha and Kaleb  Haase due to injuries but are hoping to have both back in the line-up this Friday against Luverne.
