With five top 10 finishes the Redwood Valley girls cross country team cruised to a win in its season debut Tuesday afternoon at the annual Lakeview invitational in Cottonwood.

The Redwood girls finished with 29 team points to outdistance Canby/Minneota (40) and Wabasso (73) in the five-team race.

Freshman Catherine Buffie – who was an individual state qualifier a season ago – finished in second place (20:53). Talented seventh-grader Maddie LeSage finished in fourth place (21:57), and veteran Lauren Karnitz – a four-time state participant – was sixth (23:00). Jasmine Barnes had a solid eighth-place finish (23:25), and Kyra Toreen was ninth (23:31). Seventh-grader Michelle Smith finished 14th (24:37), Jayne Russell was 24th (25:50) and Grace Caraway 25th (25:53).

The Redwood Valley boys also dominated their way to a first place victory with five top 10 place winners led by the 1-2-3 finish of veterans Jayson Peyerl (17:22), Deon Estebo (17:54) and Mason Clark (18:06). The Cardinal boys finished with 19 team points to easily outdistance Canby/Minneota (43) and Lakeview (86) in the five-team event. Sam Kahnke earned a fifth-place finish (18:27), Gavin Dow was eighth (19:00) and Xander Seaman finished 13th (19:35). Sam Fox would place 15th (19:39) and Camden Cilek was 21st (20:36).

In junior high competition, Olivia Stoterau paced the girls with a third-place finish (11:54) Brooke Zollner was fifth, Rachel Huhnerkoch sixth and Valerie Plaetz eighth. The junior high boys were led by the third-place finish of Cohen Frank (10:19).

The Redwood Valley cross country teams are off until after Labor Day when they compete at the Tracy Invitational Sept. 6. The Cardinals will travel to Marshall Sept. 10 and travel to Madison Sept. 18.
