Wabasso standout leaves mark on Wabasso athletics

Wabasso senior standout Nick Altermatt recently wrapped up a memorable senior athletic campaign by earning Class A all-state honors in baseball for the Rabbits.

Altermatt – who was recently chosen to compete in the All-Star game for the south squad – was part of a talented group of seniors that excelled in athletics, dominating in football, wrestling, baseball and track.

He had the rare feat of wrapping up his career by competing at the state tournament in three separate sports (football, wrestling and baseball) and will now take his talents to the Minnesota State-Mankato baseball program.

His career baseball stats are impressive, breaking the state record for triples (20) and breaking the school record for career strikeouts (331). Over the course of five seasons, he finished with a career batting average of .367, with 137 hits, including 29 doubles, eight home runs, 107 runs scored and 91 RBI.  He added a career .617 slugging percentage (.958 this season), with 76 stolen bases and 44 walks. As a pitcher, he finished with 16 victories and seven saves, with a remarkable career ERA of 1.80 and a career opponent batting average of just .179.

His final at-bat in a Rabbit uniform was a walk-off home run to top Hinckley-Finlayson in the consolation title game. Altermatt was also a standout in both football and wrestling for the Rabbits.

As a four-year starter at quarterback, Altermatt had a hand in 36 victories and led the Rabbits to the state tournament in back-to-back seasons, finishing as Class A state runners-up to Minneota in 2017. He finished 237-of-482 passing for 3,921 yards and 31 touchdowns. On the ground he carried the rock 296 times for 1,598 yards and 31 touchdowns.

As a wrestler, he made multiple trips to state, racking up more than 120 career victories and going 36-2 this season on the way to a third-place finish at the state tournament.
