This coming Monday (May 28) is Memorial Day.

The national holiday is set aside as a time to remember those whose lives were sacrificed to ensure the freedoms Americans enjoy are secure. It is also an opportunity to honor those lives, and, in some small way, express the gratitude for that sacrifice.

What follows is a list of programs which are being held in the area this Memorial Day:

• In Redwood Falls, a program is being held at the Redwood Falls National Guard Armory starting at 6:30 p.m. Daniel A. Ludwig, past national commander of the American Legion, will speak. Refreshments are being served at the American Legion following the program.

• A program is being held at the Odeon Hall in Belview starting at 9:30 a.m. followed by a ceremony at the Belview and Rock Dell cemeteries. A pot luck meal follows. The speaker is Raymond Pederson.

• In Vesta, a program is being held starting at 7 p.m. and will include music from the Wood Lake singers. Ceremonies will follow at both cemeteries. Refreshments will be served at the hall. 

• A program is being held in Milroy at the school starting at 10 a.m. Following the program, a ceremony will be held in the city park.

• A program is being held in Lamberton at the American Legion hall starting at 10:30 a.m. Following the program, a pot luck will be held at the hall.

• In Wabasso a program is being held starting at 10 a.m. at the community center. Second Lieutenant Kendra Goblirsch will offer the memorial address.

• A program is being held at the American Legion hall in Wanda starting at 10:30 a.m. Pastor Dan Larsen will be the speaker at the program. Lunch will be served, with a free-will offering donated to the American Legion Post.

• In Sanborn, a program is being held at the Sanborn Veterans Memorial starting at 10 a.m. Pastor Mark Jamison will offer the Memorial Day address.

• In Lucan a program is being held at 7 p.m. in the community center. A band concert begins at 6:30 p.m.

• In Morgan a program is being held at Gil-Mor Manor starting at 10:30 a.m. 

• A program is being held in Franklin at the community center beginning at 9:30 a.m.

• The Echo Memorial Day program is being held in the community center starting at 10:30 a.m. 

• In Fairfax a program is being held at the community center starting at 9 a.m.

• In Wood Lake a program is being held at the community center starting at 10:30 a.m.

• A program is being held in Olivia at the National Guard Armory at 10:45 a.m.

• A program is being held in Bird Island at 8:45 a.m. in the school auditorium

The public is encouraged to make time this Monday to attend a Memorial Day program being held in an area community.
