Redwood Valley holds off JCC for small school championship
It was another standout afternoon for the Redwood Valley boys track team Saturday in Pipestone as they held off Jackson Co. Central for their third straight small school Big South Conference championship.
The Cardinals finished with 126.5 team points to top Jackson Co. Central (121) and Blue Earth Area (112) in the seven-team event. A top three finish in each event earns the athletes Big South All-Conference honors.
It was a big day for sophomore Kaleb Haase who captured the shot put (42’5”) and discus (120’).
Senior Logan Josephson was second in four events including the 100 meter dash (11.56), the 200 meter dash (23.27), the 300 hurdles (41.59) and the long jump (20’ 10 1/4”).
Deon Estebo was second in the 800 meter dash (2:08.08) and teammate Maverick Goblirsch was fifth (2:15.34). The 4x800 relay team of Jayson Peyerl, Goblirsch, Gavin Dow and Estebo was third (9:06.96) and Kyle Huhnerkoch finished third in the 100 meter dash (12.15).
Fourth place finishes went to Jed Hansen in the pole vault (10’) and Peyerl in the 3,200 (10:54.86). Ethan Whited was fifth in the discus with a personal best of 111’ 03” and other fifth place finishes went to Goblirsch in the 800 (2:15.34), Clark in the 1,600 (5:04.07), the 4x200 relay of Jake Evans, Bennett Vollbehr, Aeneas Pacheco and Luke Grannes (1:42.10) and the 4x100 team of Logan Prouty, Grannes, Vollbehr and Pacheco (48.66) and Prouty in the 110 hurdles (19.62). Huhnerkoch was sixth in the 200 (23.27) and Andrew Stephens was sixth in the long jump (16’ 7 1/4”).
Grannes was seventh in the pole vault (9’).

The Cardinal girls earned a fourth place finish against a strong field that included champion Luverne (180) and runner-up Pipestone Area (112).
The Cards finished with 93.5 team points led by a first place finish from Aubree Hicks in the 1,600 (5:43.22) as she kicked out a personal best time.
Hannah Schjenken was second in both the 100 meter dash (13.43, personal best) and the high jump (4’10”). She was also third as part of the 4x200 relay team of Caitlyn Johnson, Alaina Goblirsch and Sydney Sommers (1:54.59) and she added a seventh place finish in the long jump (13’ 10 1/2”).
Catherine Buffie finished second in the 3,200 (12:39.72) and Bri Panitzke was second in the pole vault (7’6”) with a personal best. The 4x100 team of Johnson, Sommers, Goblirsch and Alexa Steffl (55.33) was third and the 4x400 team of Hicks, Sommers, Jahlyn Bill and Goblirsch finished fifth (4:41.03).
Steffl added third place finishes in the 100 hurdles (17.88) and the triple jump (31’ 9 3/4”) and was fourth in the 300 hurdles (51.46). Sommers was sixth in the shot put with a personal best of 31’3”), Jaidyn Probst was seventh in the discus (79’6”) and Angel Martens finished seventh in the 1,600 (6:00.24).
