Frank homers twice in 15-12 slugfest
Despite starting the season 0-3, the Redwood Valley girls softball team showed some positive signs with the season just under way.
Monday the Cardinals travelled to Morris Area/CA and lost a tough 2-0 game despite outhitting MACA 8-2. MACA scored twice in the sixth for the eventual game winning runs.
Nicole Stoen pitched well in defeat, going 6 1/3 innings and allowing just one earned run on two hits, walking four and striking out eight.
Harlee Ahrens was 2-for-4 with a double, and Jenna Pendleton went 2-for-3. Rose Frank, Madison Clennon, AJ Guggisberg and Paige Serbus all had one hit in the loss.
Tuesday afternoon the Cards travelled to Luverne and would drop a doubleheader by scores of 9-2 and 15-12.
In game one, Luverne scored a combined five runs in the third and fourth innings to take control. Stoen took the loss, allowing five earned runs on eight hits, striking out seven and walking five in four innings of action.
Haily Okins pitched two innings in relief, allowing four earned runs on three hits.
Ahrens was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, Frank went 2-for-3 and Serbus was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Clennon went 1-for-2.
Game two proved to be a slugfest as Luverne would hold on for a 15-12 victory in a match-up that featured 29 combined hits.
Luverne led 8-4 after two innings and would hold on from there in a wild one.
Okins suffered the loss, as control proved to be an issue with 11 walks being handed out. It was a huge game offensively for senior Frank as she went a perfect 4-for-4 with a pair of home runs and five RBI.
Guggisberg was right behind going 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and three RBI. Pendleton was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, Amy Martius went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored and Amanda Johnson was 1-for-3 with a double. Tori Lemcke went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI. Serbus was 1-for-4, and Okins went 1-for-1.
The Cardinals are back in action today when they host St. James in their season opener at home and travel to Pipestone Area for a twinbill this Friday.
