O'Halloran has two goals and three assists in 11-3 win over Morris/Benson Area

Scoring nine goals in the final two periods the Redwood Valley hockey team rolled to an 11-3 win over visiting Morris/Benson Area Thursday night at the Redwood Area Civic Arena.

The Cardinals (3-9) led 2-0 after one period of play but would take control with five goals in the second.

Goals by TJ Crews, Jed Hansen, Cordell Plass and Riley Eggenburg would give the home team a 6-0 advantage before the Storm (3-5-1) finally cracked the scoredboard with 3 1/2 minutes left in the second period. Axel Persson also found the net late in the period and the Cards would lead 7-2 after the first 34 minutes.

The Storm would cut the lead to 7-3 early in the third but the Cards answered back with four straight goals to close out the game. Matthew Muetzel, Will O’Halloran, Crews and Plass all found the net in the third as the Cards opened up the post-holiday schedule with an impressive win.

Senior Jack Hawton returned to the net after missing most of the first part of the season with an injury and had a great night, stopping 32 shots to pick up the win. Offensively it was a big night for O’Halloran who tallied two goals and three assists, including the game’s opening goal in the first period.

Hansen and Plass both finished with two goals and an assist and Crews added two goals. Persson continued to add to his team leading point total with a goal and three assists. Eggenburg had a goal and an assist and Muetzel added one goal. Logan Prouty chipped in with two assists and Spencer Gilk, Luke Ryan, Keegan Bourke, Chris Wersal, Folke Bjorkman and Cameran Sommers all had an assist.

Through 12 games, Persson leads the team with 14 points (nine goals, five assists) and Ryan has 12 points (six goals, six assists). Crews is third with 10 points (five goals and five assists) and O’Halloran has nine points (four goals, five assists). The Cards will host New Ulm on Tuesday night in a Big South Conference match-up.
