Tholkes scores four goals in three games
The Redwood Valley boys hockey team went 1-2 over the Christmas Break, taking part in the Two Harbors Holiday Tournament.
The Cardinals (6-5) opened with a 5-4 win over Mora/Milaca, then dropped two straight against quality opponents in North Shore and Ely.
In the tourney opener, the Cards grabbed a quick 2-0 first period lead on goals from D’on Sullivan and Chris Wersal.
Mora/Milaca (5-5) would respond with two goals in the second but Ryley Eggenberg picked up an even strength tally to keep the Cards in front 3-2 after two periods.
In the third, Bailey Sommers would picked up a big goal just 1:40 into the action and Hunter Tholkes would supply the eventual game-winner on an empty-netter with 37 seconds left in regulation.
Jack Ryan would finish with three assists, Cameran Sommers added a pair of assists and Bailey Sommers and TJ Crews each had one.
Alex Barnes would pick up the victory in net, stopping 22 shots on goal.
The Cards then fell to a good North Shore team 7-1.
North Shore (7-1) lead 4-1 after two periods of play and scored three unanswered in the third as they allowed the Cards just 15 shots on goal.
Tholkes would score the lone Cardinal goal in the first period.
Bailey Sommers and Connor Nelsen had assists and Barnes had 22 saves in a losing cause.
The Cardinals would then wrap up the tournament against Ely (5-4), falling 7-4.
Reed Stadther scored a power play goal to opening the scoring but Ely would score seven of the next eight goals to lead 7-2 after two periods of play.
Tholkes had a pair of third period goals and Nelsen added a goal in the first period.
Matthew Muetzel finished with three assists, Stadther added a pair and Bailey Sommers and Tholkes both finished with one.
Alex Barnes played well in net in a losing cause, stopping 48 shots on goal.
The Cards are back in action against Morris/Benson Area Thursday in a Big South Conference match-up.
