Sommers scores four goals to lead Redwood Valley past New Ulm 7-6

Bailey Sommers fourth goal of the night with just under three minutes left in regulation helped Redwood Valley escape with a 7-6 victory over visiting New Ulm Tuesday night in a Big South Conference hockey showdown.
The victory improved the Cardinals overall record to 4-1 and tied them atop the conference standings with Luverne (5-1).
Luverne - who topped Redwood Valley 5-0 in recent action - was defeated 6-3 by Waseca (3-2-1) for its first loss of the season.
Tuesday night the Cardinals got off to a great start, scoring three goals in the first 6:28 of the opening period.
Will O’Halloran, Sommers and Connor Nelsen all tallied even strength goals to give the Cards a quick 3-0 lead.
New Ulm would get on the board with a power play goal from Tomas Babik but Sommers answered with a power play goal of his own to give the Cards a 4-1 lead after 17 minutes of play.
Sommers and Nelsen would both score again in the second but the Eagles would score four times to cut the lead to 6-5 heading into the third.
A New Ulm power play just a minute into the third would result in the game tying goal but Sommers - who has 14 goals to lead the entire state of Minnesota through five games - would come up with the heroics late in the period to secure the win.
Alex Barnes picked up his fifth win with a 25-save effort.
Jack Ryan had two assists, while Reed Stather, Nelsen, Hunter Tholkes, Matthew Muetzel, Bailey and Cameran Sommers all had one assist.
The Cards have another big game tonight as they host Marshall in a Big South match-up.
