Florence C. Szczesniak, 89, of Spicer died Sunday, November 6 at Bethesda Grand in Willmar. Her private celebration of life service will be at a later date. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home, www.hafh.org.
Florence Szczesniak (Flo) passed away peacefully in Willmar November 6, 2022, at age 99. She was born to Henry and Eva Bernardy on March 28, 1923. She was one of 15 children. Most of her childhood and young adult years were spent in the Seaforth, Wabasso, and Redwood Falls areas.
She met Joseph Szczesniak in Redwood Falls and later married on November 17, 1942, in California where Joe was first stationed during WWII. Following Joe’s deployment and return from the war, they resided in the Twin Cities area where they raised six children and in 1964 moved the family to Wanda, where they owned and operated the Wanda Bar and Polish Palace.
Florence was always busy but, she and Joe took time to enjoy activities including dancing, bowling, and horseshoes. She also played softball in Wanda. Having been very creative and talented, she enjoyed sewing, quilting, crafting, yodeling and playing the harmonica. Family and friends had the pleasure of joining her in cards and dice games.
Florence was preceded in death by her husband and their three oldest children: Robert, Steven, and Joseph Jr., along with her parents and siblings. She is survived by three children: Luana (Kevin) Fluegge, Darwin (friend Shawna Schwartz) Szczesniak, and Mary Jo (Bill) Gabbert, as well as many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great- and great-great-grandchildren.
There will be no funeral service, but there will be a celebration of life at a later date with family. Florence will be laid to rest with her husband at Fort Snelling. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
