It was a memorable campaign on the ice this winter for the Redwood Valley duo of Michelle Smith and Tristyn Wolner. Thanks to a pairing with New Ulm, the duo helped lead the Eagles’ girls hockey team to the Section 3A title game, falling 4-0 to Big South champion Luverne.
In a wide open Section 3AA postseason tournament the Redwood Valley Cardinals went on the road Saturday and upset host Luverne 68-61 to advance into the South Sub-section semifinals. On paper, Luverne (13-12) appeared to be a tough draw, having topped Redwood Valley (13-14) twice during the regular season including a recent 72-49 blowout in mid February.
Redwood Valley junior Avery Wilson capped off a solid season with an 18th place finish Saturday at the Class A State Gymnastics Meet held in Minneapolis. Wilson - making her fourth straight appearance at the State Meet - was competing in the All-Around at State for the first time and didn’t disappoint, scoring a 35.35 to place amongst the top 20.
The Wabasso Rabbits will send a pair of wrestlers on to the State Meet following Section 3A Individual Tournament action held Saturday in in Jackson. Sophomore Kaysen Harms and senior Chase Irlbeck both earned second place finishes to move on to the State Meet held this weekend (March 2-4) at the Xcel Energy Center in St.
Ben Stoterau Sports Editor After losing six of seven the Redwood Valley boys basketball team will head into the postseason on a three-game winning streak following victories over Fairmont, Springfield and Blue Earth Area to end the regular season. Head Coach Aaron Lindahl’s Cardinals (12-14) will be the number five seed in the upcoming Section 3AA-South playoffs and will open with a tough first round opponent in Luverne (13-10).
The Redwood Valley girls basketball team wrapped up its season with a 58-35 loss to second-seeded Pipestone Area Saturday in Section 3AA-South quarterfinal action. The Cardinals (917) entered the postseason playing well, having won four of five, but a good Arrow squad made it threefor- three against the Cards this season and will move on to semifinal action.
Avenging an earlier season loss the Cedar Mountain boys basketball team rolled to a 70-56 win over Wabasso in Tomahawk Conference action. The Cougars (11-13) are currently seeded fourth in the Section 2A-North standings and would host GFW in opening round postseason action.
The Redwood Valley wrestlers wrapped up their season highlighted by a pair of third place finishes at the Section 3AA Individual Meet held Saturday afternoon in Morris. Senior Gavin Brandt (28-10) capped off a solid career and season with a third place finish at 113 pounds.
It was a memorable night for Wabasso senior Kelsey Frank as she recorded her 1,000th career point in the Rabbits dominating 65-41 win over Dawson/Boyd. The Rabbits (1114) led 35-17 at the half and never looked back en route to the non-conference victory.
The Redwood Valley girls basketball team has earned the seventh seed in the upcoming Section 3AA-South postseason tournament and will travel to Pipestone Area on Saturday for first round action. It’s been a nice turnaround season for a young Cardinal group that has gone 9-16 overall just a year after winning one game in 2021-22.
