Cougars roll past Madelia

Racing out to a 44-29 halftime lead the Cedar Mountain boys basketball team rolled to a 44-29 win over Madelia in pre-Christmas non-conference action.The dynamic duo of Blake Schueller and Blake Steffl continued to light up the stat sheet as Schueller finished with 28 points, nine rebounds, three assists, three steals and three blocked shots.Steffl added 26 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and four steals.Branndon Pendleton also had a big night finishing with 19 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and five steals.Zach Sandgren had six points and four boards and Carson Schiller had four points.Earlier the Cougars erupted for 101 points in a 101-58 thumping of Nicollet.Schueller went 17-of-23 from the floor on the way to a season-high 36 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and three assist.Steffl added 24 points, five assist, four rebounds and four steals and Pendleton had 16 points, nine assists, six steals and five rebounds.Sandgren had 14 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Cardinals pick up quality win over Eagles

Playing a complete game from start to finish the Redwood Valley boys basketball team upended a good New Ulm squad 80-70 in a pre-Christmas non-conference showdown.The Cardinals shot nearly 50 percent from the floor and won by double digits despite knocking down just six three’s and turning it over 20 times.Lukas Means had another big night, knocking down four three’s and finishing with a game-high 30 points and six assists.Isaiah Dow added 14 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals, Oliver Smith had 13 points and four boards on just six shots and Brandon Lang had 10 points and 12 boards.Ethan Louwagie had nine points and seven rebounds, Andrew Peterson added two points and six boards and Kanyon Hicks had two points and three boards.The Eagles were led by standout Colton Benson - the son of former RVHS graduate Tami Haas - who had 23 points and five boards.

Means, Dow erupt in rout of Luverne

The duo of Lukas Means and Isaiah Dow combined for 59 points and 14 three-pointers as Redwood Valley pulled away in the second half for a 92-69 rout of host Luverne Friday in Big South Conference action.The Cards (5-1) led by six at the half but would score 53 second half points and would finish nearly 50 percent from three-point range (19-of-39) while holding Luverne to just four three’s.Means buried nine three’s on the way to a season-high 33 points, two rebounds and an assist.Dow also had a season-high 26 points and was effective from the floor going 5-of-7 from long range and 15-of-21 overall to go along with a team-high 11 rebounds, four assists and two steals.Senior Oliver Smith hit a pair of three’s and would finish with eight points, seven assists and two assists, Austin Toland added seven points and two boards, Brandon Lang had six points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals and Ethan Louwagie had five points, eight assists, six rebounds and three blocked shots.Kanyon Hicks chipped in with three points, Jaden Schnobrich had two points and Andrew Peterson added two points and three boards.In an early season road test the Cards fell behind 33-21 at the half to host NL-Spicer and were unable to recover as they would fall to the Wildcats 69-59 for their first loss of the season.Both teams shot the ball well but the Wildcats (3-2) would make eight more free throws and had eight less turnovers (19-11).Means would knock down a trio of three’s to finish with 17 points, three assists and two steals and Dow had 15 points, six rebounds and two assists.Louwagie added 12 points and a steal, Lang had six points, 11 rebounds and two assists, Peterson added four points and five boards, Smith had three points and two rebounds and Hicks added two points and two assists.The Cards were in action Tuesday night against New Ulm and will then gear up for Holiday Tournament action next week.

Pendleton reaches 1,000 career points

Cedar Mountain guard Branndon Pendleton surpassed 1,000 career points recently in the Cougars 75-55 thumping of GFW in Tomahawk Conference action.Pendleton would finish with 19 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals in the victory.Blake Steffl paced the Cougars balanced attack with 25 points, six steals, five assists and three rebounds and Blake Schueller had a huge double-double of 23 points, 17 rebounds and four assists.Jake Lee added four points and Cooper Freitag had four points, seven rebounds, three assists and four steals.Friday night the Cougars travelled to SESM and fell behind 43-24 at the half and never recovered en route to a 80-57 loss to the Knights.Steffl had 13 points, five rebounds and three assists, Schueller added 13 points and five rebounds and Pendleton would add 11 points, ifve assists and three steals.---The Wabasso boys basketball team recently fell 69-56 to SESM in Tomahawk Conference action.The Rabbits had a balanced night offensively with four in double figures.

Cardinals host annual Redwood River Riot

After having to cancel the first night of the annual Redwood River Riot a year ago because of snow, the weather held up much betterthis year as the big two-day event was held over the weekend in Redwood Falls.There were a total of 36 teams with over 950 wrestlers from around the state of Minnesota competing in both varsity, junior varsity and girls divisions.

Cardinal boys pick up pair of victories

The Redwood Valley boys basketball team improved to 3-0 on the young season with a pair of recent victories over Montevideo and Windom Area.The Cardinals trailed 28-24 at the half against the Thunderhawks but would rally in the second half to earn a 54-50 victory.Neither team shot well from the floor with the Cards shooting 35 percent compared to 36 percent for the T-Hawks.

Cardinal girls edge T-Hawks

The Redwood Valley girls basketball team had three girls in double figures as they held off Montevideo 49-42 in recent non-conference action.Kylee Larsen led the way for the Cards as she finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots.Kendall Huhnerkoch would finish with 12 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals and Kenzie Lundeen had 11 points, five rebounds and an assist.Hailyn Ourada had three points and two assists, Morgan Kodet had two points and six rebounds, Cali Johnson added two points, nine rebounds and four steals and Brinn Wicks had two points and two steals.On Friday night the Cardinals fell 64-45 to visiting Windom Area.Lundeen knocked down a trio of three’s to lead the way with 17 points, six rebounds and an assist.Johnson had 11 points, four rebounds and a steal and Huhnerkoch had nine points and six rebounds.Kodet added three points and three rebounds, Larsen had four points and five boards and Ourada added one point, three rebounds and two assists.Earlier the Cards thumped GFW 62-37 in non-conference action.Lundeen had a team-high 19 points, four steals and three rebounds.Kodet had a season-high 15 points, 11 rebounds and three assists.Larsen finished with 11 points and five boards, Huhnerkoch had six points and eight rebounds, Brynne Farasyn had five points and two assists, Johnson had three points and eight steals, Wicks added three points and two rebounds.
