Cardinal netters second at SMSU Invitational

The Redwood Valley girls volleyball team continued to flex its muscles as it rolled to a runner-up finish at the Jimmy John’s Invitational held Friday and Saturday on the campus of SMSU in Marshall.The Cardinals improved to 20-6 overall on the season and remain the Section 3AA favorites as they picked up wins over Cedar Mountain (2-1), Luverne (2-0), WWG (2-0) and MACCRAY (2-0) with their only loss coming at the hands of South Dakota powerhouse Watertown (0-2).The Cards also recently held off Worthington in a rare five-setter 3-2.“I thought we played really well,” Coach Taya Lindahl said, “We played amazing defense against WWG and MACCRAY.

Cardinal runners roll to wins at BOLD Invite

The state-ranked Redwood Valley boys and girls cross country teams continued their push towards the postseason with wins Thursday at the BOLD Invitational.The Cardinal girls rolled to the title with 20 team points to easily outdistance second place GFW (68) in the nine team race.The Cardinal varsity had five of their top seven all set personal best times as well as a season best.Leading the way once again was junior Addie Thomes who knocked 16 seconds off of her personal best to win in 19:03.Ellie Nelson took 36 seconds off of her prior best to finish second in 19:17, Lola Luze took three seconds off of her best to finish in fourth (19:38) and freshman Reese Prescott knocked 22 seconds off of her prior best to finish fifth (19:51).Newcomer Mary Slavin had a strong race as well as she took 1:16 off of her season best time to place 10th in 20:41.Madi Munsell was 12th (21:26) and Heather Panitzke knocked 53 seconds off of her personal best to finish 13th (21:56).Vanessa Johnson led the JV with a first place finish with a season best time (22:20), Aleena Vestouvanh was second with a personal best time of 22:24, Annie Lunde was third and Klaira Horejsi fifth.The Cardinal boys meanwhile also dominated, finishing with 20 team points to roll past second place Sibley East (62) in the nine-team event.Will Ahrens was the winner with his time of 15:29 while Kilen Cilek finished second (15:59) and Landyn Nordby third (16:38) with a season best time.Clayton Salmon knocked out a personal best time of 16:55 to place fifth, Tyler Robinson was ninth (17:23), Aidan Salmon added a personal best to finish 12th (18:00) and Elway Berg also had a personal best in finishing 13th (18:09).Ben Jorgenson and Lane Breitkreutz both had personal bests to finish 1-2 for the JV and Cheng Lin knocked 50 seconds off of his personal best finish third.Joe Gerke and Thomas Gerke finished four-five for the Cards.Redwood Valley was back in action today in Perham before gearing up for the Big South Conference race on Tuesday in Blue Earth.

Louwagie sets passing record in rout of Wolverines

Redwood Valley senior Ethan Louwagie set a new Cardinal record with five passing touchdowns in a 56-7 rout of hapless Sibley East Friday night at Inglis Field.Louwagie broke his own record set a year ago against Windom and surpassed Mitch Irlbeck who had four touchdown passes in a game twice back in 2016.He would finish the game 12-for-17 passing for 235 yards and five scores.The Cards (4-2) racked up 443 yards of total offense and dominated the Wolverines (0-6) from the get-go as they ended a two-game losing streak.Louwagie would hook up with Zack Lundeen on a 22-yard strike to open the scoring and then hit Lane Cooper on a 23-yarder to make it 15-0 Cards after one quarter of play.He would throw three more touchdown passes in the second quarter, a 12-yarder to Zach Wilson, an 11-yarder to Andrew Peterson and a 68-yard bomb to Wilson as Wilson finished the night with five catches for 127 yards and two scores.In the third quarter, Reese Regnier would find the endzone on a 2-yard run and Max Dillon added a 39-yard touchdown scamper.Cooper would cap off the Cardinal scoring the fourth quarter when he scooped up a fumble and rumbled 92 yards for a score.Lundeen had two catches for 40 yards, Lucas Fuhr added two catches for 25 yards, Cooper had one catch for 23 yards, Peterson one for 11 yards and Ryder Crawford had one catch for nine yards.The rushing attack was led by Duran Kramer with five carries for 32 yards, Cooper had three carries for 48 yards, Dillon had two carries for 40 yards, Fuhr added three carries for 27 yards, Peterson had two carries for 17 yards, Casen Myers added two carries for 11 yards Jordan Schnobrich had one carry for five yards, Kooper Johnson added one carry for eight yards, Regnier had one carry for two yards and Tevin Sivixay had one carry for four yards.Defensively the Cards were led by Wilson with a fumble recovery, an INT and two solo tackles.Cooper had 10 tackles (five solo) and a fumble recovery for a score, Johnson had seven tackles (four solo) and a tackle-for-loss, Kramer added seven tackles (four solo), Jax Hennen had five tackles and a tackle-for-loss, Collin Johnson had four tackles, Jordan Matson added four tackles and a tackle-for-loss, Adam Mohr had four tackles and Peterson added a forced fumble and four tackles.The Cardinals travel to MVL (2-4) on Friday and wrap up the regular season on Wednesday the 16th at home against Luverne.Currently the Cards are looking at the number three seed in the upcoming Section playoffs.

Huhnerkoch reaches 1,000 kills in win over Rabbits

It was a memorable afternoon for Redwood Valley senior Kendall Huhnerkoch as she recorded her 1,000th career kill in the Cardinals thrilling 3-2 win over Wabasso Thursday at the RVHS gynasium.Huhnerkoch finished with 20 kills, 19 digs, four set assists and two blocks as the Cardinals outlasted a good Wabasso squad 25-22, 16-25, 31-29, 19-25, 15-12 in front of a packed gymnasium as part of Redwood Valley’s Homecoming Week.The Cardinals improved to 15-5 on the season and are a perfect 6-0 against Section 3AA opponents.

Ahrens, Cilek set PRs as Cardinal runners battle Tigers

It was a battle state-ranked powerhouses as visiting Marshall would edge Redwood Valley 25-34 Thursday afternoon at the Redwood Valley Invitational.Marshall is ranked number one in Class AA while the Cardinals have been ranked number one in Class A and the two teams would duke it out on a warm, fall afternoon at the tough, hilly Redwood Falls Golf Club track.The Cardinal boys would put together the best outing of the season as of the top seven runners, six would set either season or personal bests led by the dynamic one-two punch of seniors Will Ahrens and Kilen Cilek.Both would set personal bests but it was Ahrens who pulled away late and would finish in first knocking 18 seconds off of his career best with a time of 15:23 to capture the race.Cilek would finish third, knocking four seconds off of his career best with a time of 15:55 as the duo continue to push towards the postseason.Landyn Nordby would take 27 seconds off of his season best to finish in seventh (16:43), Tyler Robinson came up big as he knocked 36 seconds off of his previous best to place 10th (17:14) and Clayton Salmon was 13th with a time of 17:31 to round out the top five.Aidan Salmon hit a personal best of 18:20 in placing 22nd and Elway Berg had a season best time of 18:26 to finish 23rd to round out the top seven.Ben Jorgenson led the JV with a second place finish (18:28), Lane Breitkreutz was fifth (18:58), Cheng Lin had a personal best to finish sixth (19:46), Joe Gerke was seventh, Thomas Gerke ninth and Jackson Bawden 10th.The state-ranked Cardinal girls meanwhile were not even challenged as they cruised to the title with 21 team points.GFW was second with 71 and Wabasso third (107) in the eight team race.Addie Thomes once again led the way for the Cards with a first place finish (19:46).Lola Luze and Ellie Nelson finished one second apart (20:02-20:03) to place second and third respectively and freshman Reese Prescott (21:20) was sixth.Madi Munsell had a nice race to finish ninth (22:15), Annie Lunde was 14th with a season best time of 22:59 and Heather Panitzke was 16th (23:18).Aleena Vestouvanh set a personal best to finish first in the JV race (23:24), Klaira Horejsi (24:16) was second, Ming Lin third, Avery Monson fourth and Gracelyn Malecek fifth.Mary Slavin captured first in the JH race.The Cardinals travel to BOLD today and will head to Perham on the 10th before gearing up for postseason action.

Cardinal netters top Trojans

Redwood Valley captured three of the fourt singles matches to top Worthington 5-2 in recent Big South Conference girls tennis action.The Cards would get a 6-2, 6-0 win from Kaelynn Welsh at second singles, a 6-1, 7-5 win at third singles and Anais Cournoyer would earn a tough 7-6, 6-4 win at fourth singles.In doubles, Julia Lang and Grace Blare rolled to a 6-3, 7-5 win.Aubree Keehl and Kiki Goodthunder rallied to post a 4-6, 7-6, 10-3 win at second doubles.Elle Iverson and Faith Bruns fell in straight sets at third doubles and Lily DeBlieck dropped a 6-2, 6-2 match at first singles.The Cards also played host to Luverne and would fall 6-1.Welsh lost a competitive 6-3, 6-4 match at second singles and Cournoyer would pick up the lone win with a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 win at fourth singles.Harper Helgeson and Bruns fell 6-1, 7-5 at third doubles.

Cardinal runners competitive at Mustang Invitational

The state-ranked Redwood Valley girls and boys cross country teams finished third and fourth respectively Saturday at the Tom Watson Mustang Invitational held in North Oaks.The Cardinal girls would finish with 72 team points to place just behind second place TCIGIS (58) and champion Maple Grove (39).Leading the way was Addie Thomes who would would finish second with a season best time of 19:41.Lola Luze knocked 34 seconds off of her season best to finish in third (19:50) and Ellie Nelson added a personal best time of 19:53 to place fifth.Freshman Reese Prescott knocked 37 seconds off of her personal best to finish in seventh (20:13).Madi Munsell (22:40) was 56th and Annie Lunde (23:06) was 81st with a season best (23:06).Aleena Vestouvanh and Avery Monson both set personal best times for the JV while Klaira Horejsi and Ming Lin had season bests.The Redwood Valley boys meanwhile would place fourth with 104 team points.Roseville (43) was the team champion followed by Maple Grove (71) and TCIGIS (84).Senior Kilen Cilek continued his strong stretch with another first place finish setting a personal best time of 15:59.Fellow senior Will Ahrens was right behind in second with a time of 16:04 and Landyn Nordby had a season best time of place ninth (17:10).Clayton Salmon (17:35) was 17th, Tyler Robinson 24th (17:53), Elway Berg (18:37) and Aidan Salmon (18:45) were 51st and 58th with season bests.Lane Breitkreutz set a personal best time to finish 63rd (18:53) and Ben Jorgenson was 64th (18:54).The Cardinals also recently swept the titles at the LQPV Invitational in Madison.The girls were led by the 1-2-3 finishes of Thomes (19:58), Luze (20:24) and Nelson (20:24).Prescott (21:07) was seventh, Mary Slavin 13th (21:57), Munsell 16th (22:07) and Heather Panitzke (23:23) 25th.The Cards had 26 team points to easily outdistance rival Canby (61).The Cardinal boys would roll to the title over MCC (21-75).Cilek (16:23) and Ahrens (16:40) went one-two with Nordby (17:18) placing fifth.Robinson (17:50) was seventh, Clayton Salmon ninth (18:17), Jorgenson 17th (18:46) and Breitkreutz 23rd (19:15).Berg (18:56) and Aidan Salmon (19:33) went one-two to lead the JV.The Cardinals will host their own home Invitational today at the Redwood Falls Golf Club.
