Celebrate National Skilled Nursing Care Week

Skilled nursing care centers and their staff provide a steadfast commitment to providing a high-level of care for their residents. This has never been more evident than the last two years during the pandemic. In addition to protecting and caring for their residents around the clock, during a time of limited visitation and social distancing, staff stepped in and served as family members and friends to ensure that residents had the essential social connections they needed.

A Day for Mother

Mother's Day is the one day a year when Mother gets to put her feet up and is waited on hand and foot by her minion. Father brings her an iced coffee, just the way she likes it. The children deliver the remote control, blankets, and a snack. Uninterrupted, Mother watches an entire episode of BBC-produced British period piece on PBS. It is pure bliss.

To my Easter people

This Sunday as we were sharing are prayer concerns, we prepared as we have for the past several weeks to pray for the people of Ukraine and Russia. I said, “we should take note that these nations are primarily made up of Orthodox Christians and that while we celebrated Easter last Sunday this is Easter Sunday for them and thus, we should pray for our brothers and sisters as they celebrated the resurrection this morning.” I quickly corrected myself and said, “not that we aren’t celebrating the resurrections ourselves this morning.” I had fallen into the trap that is far to easy to stubble into treating Easter as something we celebrate one day a year and not a day that should change every day of our lives. We celebrate every day because of the resurrection.

Persistence paves the road to success

When Paulo Coehlo’s novel “The Alchemist” was first published in 1988, it went unnoticed. He sold only one copy the first week. Unperturbed, Coelho confidently waited for more sales to come in, but he waited a long time. Six months later a second copy was sold – to the same person who purchased the first copy. By the end of that first year, Coelho’s publisher decided to cancel his contract.

Reflections on a Short-Term Mission Trip

If you ever have the opportunity to go on a mission trip to another part of the world, GO! I encourage you to do it. Certainly, pray about it first to see if the Lord is leading you to embark on such an adventure. But if He gives you the green light, move forward with your plans and keep your eyes open to see the amazing things God wants to do through you… and in you.

Spring is Sprung. Or has it?

They say it’s Spring. But how do you know for sure? At first glance, it’s hard to tell it apart from Fall. Sure, the snow is melting. But underneath, there are the dead, brown leaves. Again. You may wonder: What the heck? I thought I bagged those up?! No, you bagged other leaves. But then more, other leaves fell and/or blew into your yard. Then it snowed. And you cannot bag leaves under the snow. Thus, there are the dead, brown leaves. Again. Sigh.

My first 90 days on the job

It's hard to believe that next week I will have completed my first three months at the Redwood Gazette. Time really does fly. (Especially in a fast-paced industry.) Thank you to all that have been patient with me as I am still learning the ropes to becoming editor. I am lucky to have such a great mentor like Editor Deb Moldaschel.
