To the editor: I commend the WRAP organization for offering support services for all victims of domestic violence or sex trafficking. They are needed in this age when the cultural environment is suffering from a massive breakdown of the family.

ASK A TROOPER

Question: Summertime I notice a lot more tire treads on the roads, can you write about what to do if you have a tire blow out while driving? Answer: It is important to monitor proper tire pressure and your tire condition and hopefully you can avoid a tire blow out. In the warmer months the hot air can cause your tires to increase pressure while the colder months can cause the air in your tires to condense, lowering the tire pressure.

Letters to the Editor

To the editor: I have a deep level of admiration for both the Gazette and Ava. Rural America has become an unwelcoming place, unwelcoming of any opinion not backed up by an outdated political flag, unwelcoming to change.

An opportunity to help

Last week I got a call from my dad, who had just been informed that a young woman by the name of Madison Eklund was on a 1,600-mile solo kayaking trip and was going to be stopping at the Morton boat landing for the evening. Not only was giving her a safe place to stay for the night an obvious decision, but it was an exciting opportunity for me to share her story with the community.

Education Beat: Stopping the Slide

Summer is a time for kids to kick back, take a break from routine, and enjoy lazy days. It also, in many cases, is when learning loss-aka “The Summer Slide” can take place. Summer setbacks are nothing new regarding academics and the phenomenon has been researched by educators since the beginning of time. On average, student achievement can decline over the summer by up to a third of a prior year’s learning gains. Loss is usually greater in mathematics than reading, and higher grade leveled students are more noticeably affected than younger learners. The summer slide can be measured in both social skills and classroom discipline, in addition to academics.
