Caricature portraits at the Wabasso Public Library

Celebrate National Library Week with us by getting your caricature portrait done at the Wabasso Public Library! The theme for 2025 is “Drawn to the Library,” and noted Sioux Falls artist, Hector Curriel, will be at the library from 2:15-3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8. Sign up for a five-minute session with Hector and get your caricature drawn for free. This program is made possible with funding from the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Lund’s Pioneer PBS pipestone carving special premieres March 27

Lower Sioux’s Cansayapi Cultural Department is putting together a special showing for the premiere of Lower Sioux Indian Community (LSIC) member Alex Lund’s Pioneer PBS episode on pipestone carving which airs Thursday, March 27. Hosted at Lower Sioux’s Cultural Incubator, Cansayapi Wicoicage Oti, a social hour will begin at 6 p.m. before the episode premieres at 7 p.m.

Results from National Federation of Music Clubs Festival and Redwood Area Music Festival

On Feb. 25-26 and March 1-2, seven piano teachers came together with 39 Piano Solo entries in the National Federation of Music Clubs Festival and Redwood Area Music Festival at Redwood Alliance Church in Redwood Falls. Each participant performed two memorized pieces before a judge who scored the performances. The points received are accumulated to earn Gold Cups. The teachers, their students, and their scores are as follows:

Senator Dahms’s reinsurance legislation receives second committee hearing

On Tuesday, March 11, the Senate Health and Human Services Committee heard legislation authored by Senator Gary Dahms (R – Redwood Falls) to extend Minnesota’s reinsurance program. Senate File 333 seeks to maintain the program’s success in stabilizing the individual insurance market and lowering premiums for consumers. The bill was previously passed by the Senate Commerce and Consumer Protection Committee with bipartisan support.

Protecting youth and teens from sextortion

Technology plays a huge part in our society today. We rely on it for work, online schooling, entertainment, communication with people near and far, and local and worldwide information and news. Our culture has integrated the internet and its platforms to connect us with people we know and ways to engage with new individuals. Some of the most widely used platforms by youth and teens are Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and gaming platforms such as Xbox and PlayStation. Although these platforms are beneficial, there are also dangers involved with the open nature of social media and online gaming. One of the most rapidly growing forms of abuse involving youth and teens is sextortion.

New PCLS van provides delivery services to 26 libraries and 13 school locations

The Plum Creek Library System’s courier van, dubbed DAISY (Delivery Service All Inclusive Serving You), has traveled its last route across the system territory and has been retired. The cargo van logged nearly 200,000 miles and, in 2021, replaced the former delivery vehicle that had provided 450,000 miles of road service for several years.
