What does empowerment look like for women?

Something I have been thinking about lately is the complexity of feminism and the idea of empowerment. Every woman makes the negotiation in the morning on how she wants to be perceived. Whether that is covering up to be taken more "seriously" or to capitalize on their image while moving through a male dominated society.

Love letter to a small town

When I started my career, I lived in California. I grew up in Sacramento, a town of 1,000,000. I later moved to a small town up north, Redding. Redding was a town with a population of 100,000 where the shock of living in such a “small town” was difficult to adjust to. In these towns, I’ve worked around journalism for the past 25 years. I have always loved journalism. It is the reason I sought my first job in newspapers (accounting), just so I could be near the printed word in the hopes that maybe someday, my words could be on the page.

I will sing to the Lord even when trouble surrounds me.

We don’t very much feel like praising the Lord when trouble surrounds us. And yet worship is often the very thing that we need. Time spent in God’s Word, singing a favorite hymn, a visit from your pastor, or a trip to Sunday morning worship are blessings that are not far out of reach, but sometimes our sufferings convince us that we lack the energy for any of these. When misery presses our noses against the cold walls of trouble, God’s faithful word helps us take a step back and look up to the light of his love. Even if the clouds of trouble try to block out all that is light, the Word of the Lord brings to mind that the sunshine of God’s love and how it still shines even behind those clouds. The God who created all things is steadfast in his mercy and love. His ways are made known through his Holy Word. He keeps his promises. He delivers his people from trouble and pain. God’s Word reveals how the LORD promised and sent his Son our Messiah to a broken world to forgive our sins and to remove our guilt forever.
