Area students, Haley Hacker of Morgan, and Kaleb Serbus of Redwood Falls, have earned Dean's List honors from Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minnesota, at the conclusion of the Fall 2021 semester for earning a GPA of 3.5 or higher during the semester.

Tomahawk Conference hands out awards

A pair of Wabasso seniors were recently named to the Tomahawk All-Conference boys basketball team for the 2021-22 campaign. Isaac Kronback and Sam Fenger both were honored with Kronback named to the First Team while Fenger earned Honorable Mention honors.

Cards name three to All Big South squad

Following a successful 2021-22 campaign the Redwood Valley boys basketball team had three players named to the First-Team All Big South squad. The senior trio of Alex Lang, Carson Woodford and Drew Lundeen were all honored after helping lead the Cards to a 22-win season that saw them fall one game shy of a State Tournament berth and a tie for second in the Big South West Conference standings.

Eugene Goblirsch

Eugene Goblirsch of rural Redwood Falls passed away peacefully on March 23rd at his home on the family farm, the same location where he was born 90 years earlier. He was the son of Charles and Margaret (Prokosch) Goblirsch and had a beloved sister, Dolores (Rothmeier). Gene attended St. Anne’s School in Wabasso and was a lifelong member of the parish. He proudly served in the Army as a Military Police officer in Berlin, Germany. In 1955, he married the cute neighbor girl, Marlene Manderscheid, the love of his life. They had a “handful” (as they lovingly described them) of children: Gerry (Sonja) of Alexandria, Kris (Kevin) Callahan of Eagan, Bob (Janelle) of Wabasso, Ken of Redwood Falls, and Sandy of Redwood Falls. They were blessed with twelve grandchildren: Sam (Jessica) and Sophie (Adrienne) Callahan, Brandon Goblirsch, Mindy (Ryan) Fleischer, Jamie (Beau) Taylor, Gina, Dustin, Kendra, Brady (Courtney), Alaina, Maverick, and Marshal Goblirsch; and a slew of adorable pets. Gene was the grandpa who taught all the kids to shoot and to fish, and he always had a pliers handy.

Jerome “Jerry” Charles Irlbeck

Jerome “Jerry” Charles Irlbeck, 80, of Redwood Falls, formerly of Wanda area, passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2022 at Banner Baywood Medical Center in Mesa, Ariz. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 4, 2022 at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Redwood Falls. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Sunday, April 3, 2022 at the church with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at church on Monday. Joan Teresa Gerteisen, 89, formerly of Mankato, currently residing at Madonna Towers of Rochester, passed away on Saturday, March 26, 2022. Joan was born June 7, 1932 to the late Otto and Teresa Franta of Wabasso.

Louella “Lou” Clara Randleman, 75, of Apache Junction, Ariz., formerly of Redwood Falls, passed away January 30, 2022 in Arizona. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2022 at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Redwood Falls. Visitation will be held 9-11 a.m. Wednesday, April 6 at church. To the Editor: In February, there was a column published in this paper that stated that a man was shot by the Minneapolis police due to the color of his skin. Even though I agree with the argument that this should not have happened the way it did, I do not agree with this writer pushing the race card.

Sun, clouds and volcanoes are the big climate movers; not man

To the Editor: This in response to the "Strategic Farming: Let's talk crops! Storing Carbon in production Ag systems" article in the Gazette that implies we need to stop increasing the amount of CO2 we humans are putting into the atmosphere so that we lessen the probability of extreme weather events. About 3.2% of all CO2 in the atmosphere is man-made.
