Pulling away in the final two games, the Redwood Valley girls volleyball team held off visiting Pipe-stone Area 3-1 Thursday night in a Southwest Conference?Homecoming Week showdown.
The Cardinals (6-7, 1-2) got off to a strong start in game one, as Alison Curry’s kill would give the home team a 25-17 win to open the match.
The Arrows (2-8-3, 0-2) responded by jumping out to an early lead in game two and riding that to a 25-20 win to knot the match up at one apiece.
Redwood Valley would come back in game three, rolling to a 25-15 win and then closing out the match with an exciting 25-23 win in game four.
Senior Sam Felt had a nice outing leading the team with nine kills, going 19-of-19 serving with an ace and adding 10 digs.
Fellow senior Julia Busiahn would chip in with six kills, was 8-of-8 serving and had a team-high 16 digs.
Alison Curry added six kills, three digs and a team-high two ace blocks, and?Lauren?Hanson finished with three kills, two digs and an ace block.
Alisa Bednarchuk had three kills, and Ashley Bunting was 11-of-11 serving with an ace.
Senior setter Liz Smith would finish with 20 set assists, six digs and led the team in serving going 30-of-32 with six aces.
The Cardinals take a break from its SWC schedule with three straight non-conference match-ups starting tonight at home against CM/Comfrey and Tuesday night at BOLD.
The SWC is once again shaping up to be a dogfight between stalwarts Marshall and Jackson County Central.
The Huskies recently had the Tigers at match point only to lose 3-2 in a battle of Class AA state-ranked powerhouses.
Worthington and Windom Area are both in the mix, the Cardinals lost to both but nearly beat the Eagles at home losing 3-2.
