William (Bill) Halter, Jr. was born on September 28, 1929, to William and Mina (Erickson) Halter at the family farm in Highwater Township, Cottonwood County. Bill grew up in rural Lamberton and was the youngest of nine children. Bill was baptized and confirmed at Sharon Lutheran Church in Lamberton and received his education from District #3 and #38 country schools in Highwater Township. He enlisted in the United States Army and served in Germany. Bill was a volunteer firefighter for the Lamberton Fire Department. Bill started driving truck in 1946. On September 1, 1956, Bill was united in marriage to Lillian Lindholm at Zion Church in Lamberton by Pastor Clarence Muske at Our Saviors Lutheran Church Parsonage in Lamberton. In 1964, Bill purchased the Trucking & Livestock Buying Station in Springfield from Herb Schultz. In 1966 Bill and Lil moved to Springfield. In 1982, Bill bought the Rock Street Bar and turned it into his truck shop. Bill had his Class A CDL card until he was 89 years old but was never willing to retire as he continued to help each day starting trucks, making part runs, loading brick, pushing the broom, and moving snow. “Let those truckers roll, 10-4.”
Bill enjoyed dancing, spending time at the lake, traveling, taking drives in his red pickup and side-by-side, celebrating his birthday, deer hunting with the boys, visits from family and friends, and being with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bill is survived by his son Randy (Kay) Halter of Springfield, daughter Marilyn (Marlow) Nickel of Jeffers; 10 grandchildren – Shane (Jeannie) Burns of Hanover, Scott (Dawn) Nickel of Jeffers, Shawn Burns of Naples, Fla., Jamie (Heidi) Nickel of Plymouth, Steven (Sara) Burns of Wabasso, Robin (James) Weis of Jeffers, Sean (Melissa) Burns of Lamberton, Miranda (Greg) Weedman of Janesville, Julie (Glen) Peters of Mankato, Michael (Cassandra) Halter of Springfield; 19 great-grandchildren – Brittany (David) Allion, Zachary (Nikki) and Ian (Cassie) Burns, Callie, Jack and Andrew Burns, Collin, Devin and Ella Nickel, Kiana and Keegan Nickel, Nautica, Bianca and Mikayla Weis, Gavin and Aubrey Weedman, Alivia, Adilyn, and Grahm Halter; and great-great-grandchildren; and sister Arlene (Ray) Nerem.
