Trojan gymnasts top Cardinals

The Redwood Valley gymnastics team fell to host Worthington Thursday night in an early preview of upcoming Section 3A Tournament foes.The Section 3A favorite Trojans would roll to a 139.150-127.95 win over the Cards as we inch closer to Section Tournament time.“Going up against the best in the Section was going to be a tough task but we weren’t intimidated and I thought the girls competed well,” Coach Dean Wilson said, “We continue to add more skills and we’ll be ready to go come Sections.”Senior Avery Wilson got an early taste of competing against the top All-Arounder’s in the Section as she would finish third in a tight race with her score of 35.225.Hali Bullerman (35.7) and Addison Gerber (35.625) finished one-two to lead the Trojans.Brynn Green was fifth (31.725) and McKenna Flinn sixth (30.05) for the Cards.Wilson was tops on beam (8.875), Green added a 7.425, Flinn a 7.375, Ellie Nelson a 7.125 and Olivia Stoterau a 6.95.Wilson also captured the bars (8.8), Nelson added a 7.75, Green a 7.425, Stoterau a 6.95 and Flinn a 6.8.On floor, Wilson was fifth with an 8.575, Green added an 8.35, Madison Ourada a 7.55, Flinn a 7.4 and Victoria Johnson a 7.25.Wilson would finish fourth on vault (8.975), Green added an 8.525, Flinn an 8.475, Ourada an 8.375 and Nelson a 7.9.The Cardinal girls played host to Morris Area on Tuesday.

Fuhr captures title at Wabasso Invite

Max Fuhr went a perfect 4-0 to capture the title at 160 pounds Saturday at the Wabasso Wrestling Invitational.Fuhr received the award for the most pins in the least amount of time on the way to a first place finish as the Cards placed ninth out of 11 teams.The Cards - who were wrestling without a full line-up due to the 9th Grade State Tournament - also got a fourth place finish from Max Dillon (2-2) at 145, a fifth place finish from Zach Guggisberg (3-1) at 152, Tucker Amberg (1-2) was sixth at 139 and Jax Hennen went 2-2 at 172 but did not place.Jordan Katherman, Antonio Vazquez-Martinez and Adam Mohr also competed for the Cards.The Cards had three girls compete and all wrestled well as Ava Dillon (3-0) was first at 130, Addison Schmidt finished third at 148 (3-1) and Sam Reller was second at 112 (1-1).The girls state qualifier will be held in Redwood Falls on Feb.

Cardinal boys split pair of games

The Redwood Valley boys basketball team split a pair of recent battles, rolling at home over Luverne and losing a barn burner with Spectrum Saturday afternoon in Becker.The Cardinals (13-4) thumped Luverne 96-60 Friday night to sweep the season series and improve to 9-1 in Big South Conference action.Saturday night they travelled to face a good Spectrum (14-2) squad and unfortunately let a 12-point halftime lead go by the wayside in an 84-82 loss.It was a well played game that statistically was a wash with both teams shooting well and the Cards actually forcing more turnovers.Elway Berg played well in defeat, going 6-of-10 from long range to finish with a team-high 26 points and six rebounds.
