Indians top Cardinal girls in debut

The Sleepy Eye Indians rolled to a 69-31 win over Redwood Valley in the non-conference season opener for both schools.Kendall Huhnerkoch led the way for the Cards with eight points, five rebounds and five steals.Hailyn Ourada had six points, four steals and three boards, Kylee Larsen added five points and four boards, Cali Johnson had four points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals, Brynne Farasyn had three points and two boards and Morgan Kodet had two points and five rebounds.---The Wabasso boys basketball team topped Lakeview 66-47 in recent non-conference action.The Rabbits outscored the Lakers 35-19 in the second half to secure the win.Noah Anderson had 18 points, five assists and three boards.Tavyn Larson added 11 points and five boards, Joe Liebl had 10 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, Tristan Larson added 10 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots, Brayden Guetter had eight points, five assists and five rebounds and Ashton Rohlik had seven points and an assist.---The Cedar Mountain boys basketball team rolled to an 89-61 win over Cleveland in their season debut.Blake Steffl went 12-of-15 from the floor on the way to 27 points, eight assists, three rebounds and three steals.Blake Schueller meanwhile was 11-of-17 from the floor to finish with 26 points, 12 rebounds, three steals and two assists.Zach Sandgren had 11 points, three assists and three rebounds and Branndon Pendleton had 10 points, six assists, six steals and four rebounds.

Cardinal boys open season with road win

The talented Redwood Valley boys basketball team opened up the regular season with a 63-47 win over rival Minnewaska Area Saturday afternoon in the season debut for both teams.The Cardinals led 35-24 at the half and were never really threatened the rest of the way en route to the double-digit road win.Both teams struggled from the floor as the Cards finished 35 percent including 8-of-33 from long range while the Lakers shot just 28 percent from the floor and were 8-of-30 from downtown.The Cards also hit just 11-of-20 from the charity stripe but forced 22 turnovers and had 10 more transition points.Lukas Means - one of the top three-pointers in the state - buried six from long range to lead the Cards with 24 points, four rebounds and three assist.Elway Berg would finish with 14 points, seven rebounds and two steals and Isaiah Dow added six points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.The Cards had 11 players reach the scoring column.

Cardinal gymnasts top Eagles

The Redwood Valley gymnastics team opened up the season with an impressive 129.875-129.325 win over visiting New Ulm Friday at the Redwood Area Community Center.Senior Avery Wilson finished second in the All-Around with a score of 33.1 and seventh-grader Brynn Green was fourth with her total of 31.175.Wilson was tops on floor (8.975) and bars (8.8), second on vault (8.525) and scored a 6.8 on beam.Green added a .7475 on vault, was fifth on bars (7.475), sixth on beam (7.825) and third on floor (8.4).Chloe Walters (8.425) and Olivia Stoterau (8.275) were fourth and sixth respectively on vault.
