Ash Wednesday

I am writing this column on Ash Wednesday, which is normally the single most hectic day of the year. Typically this is the day that our parish youth group hosts a soup and bread potluck with bake sale, which I coordinate as the primary youth group leader for my churches. I spend the day rehearsing my sermon, making sure everything is ready for the worship service in general, taking the ashes of last year’s Palm Sunday palm branches and mixing them with just enough olive oil to make them ready to mark the foreheads of worshipers, arranging tables in the fellowship hall, running to the store for whatever I have forgotten and generally trying to stay calm.
