WALTER VALENTIN

Walter Valentin, 89, of Fairfax passed away Saturday, February 25, 2023, at his home in Fairfax. A private family service was held with interment in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Cairo Township, Renville County. Clergy Officiating: Reverend Matt Hausken. Walter Ferdinand Valentin was born on July 15, 1933, in Eden Township, Brown County. He was the son of William K. and Helene E. (Lerch) Valentin. On July 21, 1954, Walter entered active military service in the United States Army and served his country during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on June 5, 1956, having achieved the rank of SP3(T). On July 9, 1960, Walter was united in marriage to Doris Panitzke at St. John Lutheran Church in Redwood Falls. After their marriage, the couple farmed in Palmyra Township. This union was blessed with four children. He was also employed by Schweiss Bifold Doors in Hector, where he and Doris were grateful to be employed by such wonderful people. Walter and Doris shared 62 years of marriage. Walter was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fairfax and the American Legion Post #308 in Franklin for 43 years. Walter enjoyed farming. He cherished the time he spent with his family. Walter enjoyed gardening and continued spending time on the farm helping out where he could. Walter passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at his home in Fairfax at the age of 89 years. Blessed be his memory. Walter is survived by his: wife, Doris Valentin of Fairfax; children, Kurt Valentin of Franklin, Pamie Zempel and her husband Dennis of Morgan, Dawn Schroedl and her husband Paul of Fairfax, and Paula Benson and her husband Eric of Franklin; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters; three brothers; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Shirley A. Peters, 86, passed away Monday, February 27, 2023, at Prairie Senior Cottages, Willmar, with family by her side. Funeral services for Shirley will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 11, 2023, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Redwood Falls. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. ELDON HAMMERSCHMIDT

Mass of Christian Burial for Eldon Hammerschmidt, 82, of Marshall took place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall. Visitation took place from 9:30 - 11 a.m. at the church. Interment will take place at St. Anne’s Catholic Cemetery in Wabasso at a later date. Military honors provided by U.S. American Legion Post 113 of Marshall. Eldon Paul Hammerschmidt was born on February 11, 1941, in Redwood Falls to Joseph and Susan (Bernardy) Hammerschmidt. He grew up in Wabasso and graduated from Wabasso High School. Eldon enlisted and served in the U.S. Army. On September 18, 1965, he was united in marriage to Virginia Zollner at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Wabasso. The couple was married for over 50 years and later divorced in 2016. To this union were born daughters Janell and Tiffany. Eldon was a hard worker and held many jobs over the years. He operated “Eldon’s Grocery” in Lucan, owned a meat locker in Vesta, worked for Schwan Food Company in Marshall and worked for the City of Lucan. Eldon was a volunteer firefighter in Lucan and long-time member of the Lucan Lions. Eldon was a man of many talents. He enjoyed playing cards, especially with family or friends. He also enjoyed the outdoors including deer hunting, fishing or camping. He loved music of all types and played the accordion. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing baseball and softball. Eldon also enjoyed telling a good story. He didn’t necessarily embellish but he remembered big. He was very proud of his daughters and granddaughter. Eldon died on Sunday, February 19, 2023, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. He is survived by daughter Janell (Jim) Randa of Harmony, granddaughter Ginnie, daughter Tiffany (Jason) Kerr of Marshall, brothers Delbert Hammerschmidt, Virgil Hammerschmidt, Alois Hammerschmidt and Clifford (Barb) Hammerschmidt, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Election judges appointed for April 11 School District Special Election

The regular meeting of the Independent School District No. 2897 Board of Education was called to order by Board Clerk Darin Prescott on Monday, Feb. 27 in the Redwood Area Schools Board Room. Members present were Darin Prescott, Sarah Myers, Mark Dressen, Meghann Kodet, Derek Woodford, Andrew Lueck and Matt Tiffany. Superintendent Becky Cselovszki and Finance Director Tom Anderson were also in attendance.
