Dr. Mike Thomas of Abington Family Dental Care wants your Halloween candy. And no, he does not want to eat it. He wants to buy it. Thomas’ practice is hosting “the great Halloween buyback,” during which his patients are being invited to sell their Halloween candy to him at the rate of $1 per pound.
After Thomas collects the candy, he will have it shipped to soldiers fighting overseas through a non-profit group called Operation Gratitude.
“I heard of the group and the program through a dental Web site,” Thomas said. “I think all dentists should be involved in this.”
He explained the candy buyback program was specifically geared to area dentists.
“Ditch the candy, that’s what we’re saying,” Thomas said. “Visiting your dentist twice a year and brushing and flossing daily are great preventative measures, but doing away with excess sweets altogether would really give your teeth a healthy boost.”
Thomas added that global sugar consumption for children increases annually by 2 percent, noting 50 million tons of candy is consumed each year.
He said candy will be collected between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. at Abington Family Dental Care at 469 Washington St. on Sunday, Nov. 1, the day after Halloween.
“This is the first time we’ve done this and I think we’d like to continue to do it every year,” Thomas said.
He said while most of his patients are from Abington, Rockland and Whitman, anyone is welcome to come by and participate in the candy buyback.
According to its Web site, www.opgratitude.com, “Operation Gratitude seeks to lift morale and put smiles on faces by sending care packages addressed to individual Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines deployed overseas. Operation Gratitude care packages contain food, hygiene products, entertainment items and personal letters of appreciation, all wrapped with good wishes of love and support.
“Through collection drives, letter-writing campaigns and donations of funds for shipping expenses, Operation Gratitude provides civilians anywhere in America a way to express their respect and appreciation to the men and women of the U.S. military in an active, hands-on manner.”
