Despite giving up two forfeits, the Redwood Valley wrestling team rallied for a thrilling 39-33 victory over host Worthington Thursday night at the Trojan Triangular.
Down 18-0 after three matches, the turning point of the match came at 125 pounds where Bryce Farringer was down 8-4, but he fought back to earn a third period fall over Kyle Wiese.
Tyon Giernet – wrestling in his first varsity match – then came through with another huge win – pinning Ethan Peterson at the 3:19 mark of the second period to cut the Trojan lead to 18-12.
Chad Milhausen also came up big at 140 pounds. Down 7-6 he rallied for a third period fall, and Travis Gewerth needed only 30 seconds to pick up a pin at 145 to put the Cardinals on top 24-21.
Dominic Sweetman (19-5) earned a 5-1 decision at 152, Nick Anderson picked up a a hard fought 10-7 victory at 160 and Dan Senger gutted out a 12-8 win at 171.
The Trojans stayed alive with a fall at 189, but David Moore put the match away with a second period fall at 215.
The Cardinals then squared off against a tough Sioux City East (Iowa) team losing 69-3.
Dillon Thooft wrestled well earning a 13-9 win at 103 pounds.
In other recent action, the Cards lost a pair of competitive duals with River Valley and Martin County West.
The Cardinals fell 45-30 to River Valley, as Moore and Gewerth earned falls and Thooft, Sweetman and Josh Fuhrman won by forfeit.
The Cardinals then fell 42-30 to MCW as Sam Schmidt, Gewerth, Anderson and Moore all picked up falls with Sweetman and Farringer winning decisions.
