Crookston High School athletic coaches select Pirates of the Week for boys and girls basketball, boys and girls hockey, wrestling and the dance team. Chosen athletes were published on Wednesday, Feb. 1.

Crookston High School Pirates coaches Greg Garmen, Darin Zimmerman, Josh Hardy, Jaclyn Martin, Wes Hanson and Adrianne Winger select student athletes to be featured as Pirates of the Week. For the week of Jan. 30-Feb. 3, the Crookston Daily Times features Preston Desrosier (wrestling), Chris Wavra (boys basketball), Tiffany Hanson (girls basketball), Cade Salentine (boys hockey), Macy Strem, Kayla Stahlecker, Jayden Allrich, Kendall Wahouske, Maddie Nicholls, Kaitlyn Thingelstad, Ali Hutter, Jadine Moran-Mello, Tansy Thomas-Bland and manager Alicia Johnson (girls hockey) and Olivia Forgit, Brianna Kelly, Hannah Lindemoen, Amanda Schultz and Quinn Siegle (dance team).

Wrestling coach Wes Hanson says: "Preston Desrosier had a huge week for the pirates. He earned his 75th win on Senior Night winning a tight decision in front of the home crowd. Then picked up a nice win Friday night in the dual against Grand Rapids. He wrestled extremely well in the 59th annual Skip Nalan tournament where he was the champion at 152 lbs. He is a technical wrestler with good scrambling capabilities. Preston steps up when the pressure is on and is a great captain and leader for our program. It's been a real honor coaching him this season. He went 7-0 in competition last week."

Boys basketball coach Greg Garmen says: "Chris Wavra has been on fire from 3 pt land as of late for the Pirates."

Girls basketball coach Darin Zimmerman says: "Tiffany has been an integral part of our program. Even though she may not have helped our team in the traditional sense, as she continues to rehab and work her way back from injury, she provides leadership and grit. Grit is something we talk about a lot in our program. In short it means passion and perseverance to achieve long term goals. I can't think of anyone who has better exemplified that than Tiffany this season. She has been committed, She has ran every conditioning drill and helps us prepare everyday. Her perseverance through a major injury with enthusiasm and grit.have been examples to us all this season."

Boys hockey coach Josh Hardy says: "Cade is a junior goalie for the Pirates and has been solid all year in the nets. His work ethic and competitive spirit set the tone for the Pirates in practices and games. He has a bright future not only in hockey but all his endeavors."

Girls hockey coach Jaclyn Martin says: "Whether or not they played every other shift or only in certain games, our seniors are a huge part of our team. They've all worked so hard to get to where they're at and we will be sorry to see them go. Each one of them should be proud of not only this year, but their entire youth and high school hockey career. It's a huge accomplishment and we're all so very proud of them."

Dance team coaches say: "Coaches Adrianne and Sarah are so proud of each of these fully-committed seventh graders and their dedication to the dance team and to each other. We are so proud of all you being on the team."
