Gasbag: a suspense story

This past weekend I finally saw the 1944 movie Gaslight, a suspense story about a husband who plays all sorts of tricks on his wife to convince her she’s going crazy so he can have her committed.
I thought that was a great idea, and immediately decided to convince my wife, Shawn, that she was losing her sanity.
Here’s how it went.

Host an exchange student, help CURE

If you’ve always wanted to open up your home to a student from another country, now is your chance.

EDITORIAL - It's for life

Certain phrases stir up emotion, but few have the power to evoke so many different feelings and thoughts than this: "You have cancer."

Secrets of good journalism

Sometimes when I put together a story for the newspaper, half the challenge is deciding what to leave out.

More on the ‘rest of the story’

The story of an old, abandoned cemetery in Vesta Township has apparently become the talk of the area, as I have had a number of people stop and ask me questions about it.
Others have called to tell me their story about the site.

Minnesota is still the best

I just returned from an over-the-road trip through the states of Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri chalking up a vacation to attend an Air Force reunion and stay with a friend for a week in Branson. Dis-counting the 700-some mile drive each way, it turned out to be a relaxing week off.

Home is where the TV is

When I was a little kid growing up in southern California, it was a requirement for my family to watch Little House on the Prairie every week because it was set near Redwood Falls.
The fact Little House on the Prairie was shot a short drive from Malibu Beach - and looked it - was something we politely chose to ignore.

And now, the rest of the story....

If you didn’t notice, I was on vacation this past week. Again, you can thank me for the rain.

Fairfax sure can promote baseball

For the third year in a row, I had the opportunity to take in the Fairfax Twins Fun Night.
For several years now, event officials have brought in top retired former major league baseball players to meet a grandstand full of baseball fans who come to watch the Fairfax Cardinals take on the Searles Bullheads at an amazing baseball park.

Inquiring minds want to know

I have to start this column off with an apology.

Greater Minnesota: Why I hate it

When I was a kid, I lived in what was known as rural Minnesota – farm country.
Somewhere along the line things changed, and some people stopped calling it rural Minnesota (as opposed to metro Minnesota) and began calling everything outside of the seven county metro area “Greater Minnesota.”
For me, this is one of those million dollar names some politician or “expert” came up with to try and create some sort of general term for all of Minnesota that was not the Twin Cities.

Give youth a life full of promise

Though Redwood Falls is a small, rural town, we have issues as broad as those found in New York City and cities and mountain villages in Afghanistan. I have been to New York numerous times and once saw a drug deal in a cemetery in broad daylight.

I have seen deals in broad daylight in Redwood Falls, as well.

Jury still out on court news

Why do newspapers include court news? The standard justifications are “it’s public record” and “the public’s right to know.”
But just because the public has a legal right to know something, does that mean it should?
Well, yeah, in many cases.

When peanuts isn’t enough

Growing up, Father’s Day was one of those days we celebrated when Dad could.
Being a farmer, he would often be out spraying or doing other field work on the day set aside for dads.

Brownton played a part in Nobel prize

This year Norman Borlaug was inducted posthumously into the Minnesota Inventors Hall of Fame. Borlaug, who earned the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize for saving millions if not billions of lives for his agricultural research in combating global hunger, will probably never be topped by any other inventor.
Borlaug was one of only six people to have won the Nobel Peace Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal.
What most people don’t realize is Borlaug was also inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame while at the University of Minnesota.

Soul mates and sportsmanship

How many couples have that “Ah ha!” flash of love-at-first-sight?
How many future couples bump into each other for years before they get an inkling that other person there is their real soul mate?

Editorial - Weekend to do list

One could argue the second weekend of June is the busiest in the area. rom Friday all the way through Sunday afternoon, the agenda is full, and for those of us who are planning to take it in, it should be a lot of fun. We encourage you to take in as much as you can from this weekend, and, in our opinion, each of the scheduled events is worth your time.

A maiden voyage to the airport

Contrary to what you read in the headline, this was not my first trip to the airport.
It was for someone else.

Desiderata has a noble message

Graduation is frequently referred to as commencement, which of course means beginning. This beginning can be viewed as another stage of life.

Bob the Builder plays nice

When the old Masonic Lodge was being knocked down on June 1, I saw something cute.
