There’s been a lot of talk about whether or not a pro-life commercial featuring Florida’s star quarterback Tim Tebow should be allowed to air during the Super Bowl.
As I write this column Thursday, we still don’t know if it is going to hit our TV screen Sunday at halftime.
The commercial, with its anti-abortion message, stems back to when Tebow’s mother, Pam, became pregnant with him and while on a Christian mission in the Philippines, she contracted a tropical ailment.
She was diagnosed with placental abruption – a separation of the placenta and uterine wall – her doctor recommended an abortion, because this condition has killed thousands of women and fetuses, not to mention leaving children at home without a mother.
Pam decided to put her faith in God and came through the birth OK. Her son grew up to be a Heisman Trophy winner.
Anytime you bring up the subject of abortion, it’s bound to rub someone the wrong way. For many years I took the pro-choice stance, thinking it should be a woman’s decision whether or not she should abort a baby.
I can’t imagine having to make this decision in a case of rape, incest or when health of the mother is at risk.
You also need to take into account if it is illegal, you hear these bad stories about coat hanger abortions in unsanitary, unskilled back alleys.
I’d never endorse partial birth abortion; to me that is outright murder.
Lately, after having two kids of my own, and especially now that I have two granddaughters, I believe I am just a smidgeon away from being pro-life. I’ve been noticing those highway billboards a lot more lately too.
Being a parent and grandparent is one of the best gifts God can give to man and woman.
A recent poll conducted in January notes 18 percent believe abortion should always be legal and 34 percent said usually legal.
Twenty-four percent said it should usually be illegal and 18 percent thought it should alway be illegal. Five percent were unsure.
Tim Tebow is one of those stellar persons (notice I didn’t say athletes) who does his part to give.
He doesn’t spend his summers getting into trouble, but travels to impoverished countries to dispense medical care to children.
He’s one of few who is also saving himself for marriage.
I have no problem with this commercial running during the Super Bowl or anytime, there are other embarrassing commercials we see on TV every day that offend me more.
I also believe if this commercial airs, then next year the pro-abortionists should have a right to air a commercial of their own.
Turnabout is fair play.
If you see this commercial coming in the future and you know you will be offended by it, hit “previous channel” on your remote control, or go to the refrigerator and get yourself a beer and cool off.
