Contrary to printed information in the March 11 edition in the Redwood Gazette, the veterans cemetery project in Redwood County is not being threatened by a new proposal at the state legislature.
The veterans cemetery project, said Marty Caraway, Redwood County veterans service officer, is still on track. In fact, much of the design work and development for the project is all ready to go.
What remains to be accomplished for the project is the acquisition of land for the cemetery.
According to Caraway, those working on the project have a piece of land in mind for the cemetery, but that move has not yet been finalized.
He said the cemetery needs approximately 50-70 acres of land for the cemetery, and according to the legislation approved that land must be within the borders of Redwood County.
The funding for the project is coming both from the federal government and the state, with the federal government covering the costs of design and development and the state covering the costs of the land acquisition as well as any future upkeep and operations. More information is going to be printed as it becomes available.
