The Redwood County Council of the American Legion, in conjunction with Redwood Falls Troop 97 of the Boy Scouts of America, is conducting a flag burning ceremony Saturday, at 6:30 p.m. in the lower portion of Ramsey Park.

The ceremony is the prescribed method of destroying flags no longer suitable for use.

Frank Wilkinson, commander of the Redwood County Council of the American Legion, said there are a number of locations that citizens can drop off flags that need to be destroyed.

“Anyone who wants to bring a flag that needs to be disposed of and wants to stay for the ceremony is more than welcome,” Wilkinson said. “Or they can drop flags off anytime at the American Legion in Redwood Falls, the Veterans Service Office at the courthouse, or at Ricky J’s Car Wash.”

Wilkinson said torn, faded, frayed or in any other way discolored flags are eligible to be properly disposed of at this ceremony.

“We don’t want flags going into the garbage and ultimately the landfill,” Wilkinson said. “That is not the proper way to dispose of an American flag. It is our national symbol and we want to handle it properly when it is not in a usable condition anymore.”
