Redwood Falls, Minn. —
Last year’s first annual Parade Day 5k Run/Walk, held last MIC weekend just before the community parade began, was expected to attract 25 runners.
Sixty seven runners participated instead. The run, which started at the high school and ended with runners racing on streets lined with parade goers, was a hit.
On Tuesday, the Redwood Falls City Council approved letting the Bike and Hike Committee, the Lions Club, the RACC, and SHIP host the run a second time.
To make for a safer and more scenic route, the route has been changed this year to include several of the new bike and hike trails added Tin Street.
In addition, the end point of the race has been changed to the tennis courts by the Family Aquatic Center.
The Parade Day 5k Run/Walk is set this year for June 8, right before the community parade starts. Contact the RACC for more details.
In other city news, the council:
• Approved the PUC extending the bidding process for repairing the old powerhouse so that it can be retrofitted with a new hydroelectric generator.
Bids on the project were received Dec. 21, 2011, and were scheduled to be approved at Tuesday’s meeting.
However, on Jan. 9, the city received a notice from the Army Corps of Engineers requiring the city to evaluate the old powerhouse to see if it should be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Minnesota statues allow the bidding to be put on hold for up to 100 days while the evaluation is going on.
Part of the evaluation process involves the city having to pay an outside consulting service from Hess Roise to perform the work, for $12,900, which was approved by the council.
• Approved an engineering agreement with DGR for the Sunrise “overhead to underground” electrical line conversion, for $23,000.
