County discusses social host ordinance

 

A movement among local units of government has been taking place in recent years, as law enforcement entities in conjunction with county attorney’s offices and other agencies work to help reduce underage drinking.
The effort, known as a social host ordinance, would change the current rules in those entities approving the ordinance.

Law enforcement to conduct distracted driving campaign

The Redwood County Sheriff’s Department is going to conduct extra enforcement April 19 in an effort to reduce distracted driving.

Turrubiates sentenced to 20 years

 

The name “Tiana” means princess, and that name was chosen specifically for a little girl who was just that.
“She was my princess,” said Kristina Kirscher, mother of Tiana Moore, who died Dec. 24, 2010 as a result of head injuries sustained while under the care of Sergio Turrubiates, Jr.
Turrubiates, who was charged in December 2010 with second degree murder pleaded guilty in early February to second degree unintentional murder in Renville County District Court.

City cracks down on tobacco sales to minors

 

In Minnesota, it is illegal for anyone under 18 to own tobacco products, or for anyone to sell tobacco products to or for them.
There’s a real financial incentive for business to look the other way though, and unfortunately Redwood Falls businesses fare worse than average for the state.
“We had three businesses fail the compliance checks this year,” said Redwood Falls City Attorney Patrick Rohland. “Since 1998, we’ve had up to six fail at one time. One of our goals now is to have zero failures.”

Officer Dana Woodford keeps the school hallways safe

 

In Nov. 2003, about a month after Redwood Falls Police Officer Dana Woodford started her new assignment in the local schools, she had to make a decision.
A high school girl assaulted another student on school grounds, and Woodford had to step in to make an arrest...
...of a student....
...in the school cafeteria....
...during lunchtime, with a hundred students watching.
Woodford approached the girl and quietly suggested they step into the office.
“Get away from me!” the girl shouted, knocking Woodford’s hand away and throwing in a few four-letter words.
Woodford had a choice. She could walk away and approach the student later, or she could take control right then.
Woodford made a decision.

Five charged in stabbing incident

 

Five individuals have made appearances in Redwood County Fifth District Court related to a stabbing incident which took place one week ago at a Lower Sioux location.
Four of the individuals appeared this past Wednesday, and the fifth made a first appearance Friday morning.

On Feb. 5 at 9:23 p.m., the Redwood Falls Police Depart-ment was called to the report of a one-vehicle crash along the 700 block of East Chestnut Street. 

Four in custody after Monday night stabbing

 

On Feb. 7 at 1:30 a.m. officers from the Lower Sioux Police Department were called to the report of a stabbing at 33009 Jackpot Avenue in Redwood County.
At the scene five individuals were discovered with injuries.

Sentenced to Serve

Redwood County's Sentenced to Serve program lets convicted offenders work off their fines or community service doing maintenance for various county facilities such as parks and schools. 

Tyler Schmit, sentenced for assault, is in the program to work off the costs of his probation supervision.

 

“It’s a great program to work off our fines,” said Schmit. “I’m glad they got the program going again. I don’t think there’s any other way they would have gotten their money."

Law enforcement arrests four during DWI campaign

The Redwood Falls Police Department and Redwood County Sheriff’s Department arrested four impaired motorists during a statewide DWI enforcement effort, Dec. 1-31. 

Alcohol compliance checks result in five failures

 

The Redwood Falls Police Department conducted alcohol and tobacco compliance checks in December. 
At the conclusion of those checks it was reported two establishments which had been checked failed to comply with the alcohol compliance law, and three establishments checked failed to comply with the tobacco law.

Redwood State Patrol trooper injured in Sunday crash

 

A Minnesota State Patrol trooper was injured Sunday afternoon in a head-on crash at the intersection of TH 67 and CSAH 101 on the southeast edge of Redwood Falls.
Matt Smith, 39, of Redwood Falls sustained non-life-threatening injuries after crashing his squad car into another vehicle.

Twenty-one arrested in county-wide drug bust

 

After an extensive twelve month investigation conducted by the Brown-Lyon-Lincoln-Redwood-Renville Drug Task Force, 21 people were arrested on various felony drug charges in Redwood County Dec. 13, 2011. 
These arrests followed five other felony-level drug arrests made by the Drug Task Force Dec. 2, 2011 that were the result of the same investigation. 

DWI crackdown results in four arrests

The Redwood Falls Police Department and the Redwood County Sheriff's Department enhanced Halloween enforcement crackdown, Oct. 28 to Nov. 1, resulted in four DWI arrests.
