Garman scores career-high 39 points in 78-68 win over Worthington

Worthington had no answer for Redwood Valley sophomore Haley Garman as she scored a career-high 39 points to lead the Cardinals to a 78-68 road win over host Worthington Thursday night in Big South Conference girls hoops action.

Garman knocked down 17 shots and hit five free throws as the Trojans (1-1) could not match-up with her in the post. The Cardinals (2-0) trailed by double-digits early in the first half but cut the deficit to two (31-29) by halftime and then pulled away in the second half.

Fellow sophomore Sydney Sommers knocked down a trio of three’s on the way to 21 points and Aubree Hicks added eight points. Amy Martius finished with seven, AJ Guggisberg had two and Bri Panitzke one.

The Cards opened up the season with an impressive 73-24 rout of visiting Cedar Mountain. Tenacious defense helped the Cardinals take a 35-14 lead into the break and they would roll from there.

Redwood Valley showed nice balance offensively as Sommers led the way with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Garman finished with 16 points and seven boards and Hicks had 13 points, four rebounds and three steals. Guggisberg added 10 points and two rebounds as all four double-digit scorers for the Cards are just sophomores.

Leah Irlbeck chipped in with nine points, Hannag Schjenken added six points, three rebounds and three steals, Alex Steffl had one point and Panitzke dished out three assists.

The Cards shot 43 percent from the field and were 10-of-19 from the charity stripe. The Cougars meanwhile shot just 22 percent from the floor (9-of-41) and hit just two free throws.
