With many runners setting personal bests the Redwood Valley boys and girls cross country teams earned a pair of second-place finishes Thursday at the Redwood Valley invitational held at the Redwood Falls Golf Club.

The Cardinal girls finished a narrow second to Southwest Minnesota Christian (48-52) led by a second-place finish and personal best time of 19:37 from Catherine Buffie.

Seventh-grader Maddie LeSage continued her strong start, knocking 1:22 off of her season best to finish fourth in a time of 20:24. Jasmine Barnes (22:01) also set a personal best to finish in 13th, and Lauren Karnitz had a season best time of 22:13 to place 15th.

Kyra Toreen (22:27) knocked 1:04 off of her personal best time to finish 18th, Grace Caraway (22:50) took a whopping two minutes off of her personal best to finish 21st and Michelle Smith (23:42) had a season best time in placing 26th.

Payton Schueller took 38 seconds off of her personal best to finish in first place and lead the JV to a first-place finish with a time of 24:44. Teammate Cassie Omtvedt (24:49) took 50 seconds off of her personal best to finish in second. Lizzie Guggisberg was fifth, Jayne Russell sixth, Victoria Jorgenson was eighth and Julie Prouty 10th.

Olivia Stoterau was second in the girls junior high race, Valerie Plaetz fourth and Rachel Huhnerkoch fifth.

The Redwood Valley boys, meanwhile, also had a strong meet with many runners establishing personal bests. The Cardinals finished with 39 team points to place just behind champion Marshall with 30.

Jayson Peyerl knocked 12 seconds off of his personal best to finish third in a time of 17:02, and Mason Clark (17:22) knocked 11 seconds off of his personal best to finish in sixth place. Xander Seaman (17:41) set a personal best in finishing ninth, and Deon Estebo was 10th in a time of 17:45.

Sam Kahnke (17:45) recorded a new personal best to finish in 11th, Gavin Dow (18:07) knocked 34 seconds off of his personal best to finish 15th and Sam Fox (18:38) had a personal best time in placing 17th.

The Cardinal JV team finished in second place led by a fifth-place finish and personal best time from Leo Steffl (19:08). Tate Goodthunder (19:29) knocked 59 seconds off of his previous best to finish in seventh, and Luke Hammerschmidt set a season best in placing 10th. Grant Liebl was 15th and Justus Probst 17th. Daniel Haen and Cole Mathiowetz both set personal bests.

Camden Cilek led the junior high boys with a second place finish. Mason Bawden was 13th and Cohen Frank 14th. The Cardinal runners are back in action Thursday at the BOLD invitational.
