Redwood Valley to face Pipestone Area in battle of state-ranked rivals
Dominating in all phases of the game the Redwood Valley football team rolled to a 21-0 victory over host St. James Area Friday night in a South Central (White) District match-up.
The state-ranked Cardinals (4-0) pitched their second shutout of the season and through four games are allowing just 6.5 points per game . They will now turn their attention to a huge mid-season showdown with rival Pipestone Area Friday night for Homecoming at Inglis Field.
The state-ranked Arrows are also 4-0 and allowing just 6.25 ppg. The Cardinals and Arrows have met twice in the last three seasons in the Section 3AA title game match-up with the Arrows winning both (including a 20-17 OT match-up last year).
Friday night the Cardinals took early control on a three-yard touchdown run from Logan Prouty. Cole Woodford added the two-point conversion run and it was 8-0. Alex Louwagie connected with Woodford on a key 32-yard reception on the drive, and Prouty added a 27-yard scamper to set up his touchdown.
Midway through the second quarter the Saints (2-2) drove deep into the Cardinal red zone, but the Cardinal defense would force a field goal try from 20-yards out that was blocked and scooped up by sophomore Connor Josephson and returned 88 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was good, and the Cards would take the huge momentum swing and a 15-0 lead into the half.
Prouty would add another short touchdown run of five yards in the third quarter to cap off the scoring, as the Cardinal defense would not allow the Saints to get back in the game.
The Cards finished with 224 yards of offense (135 passing), while allowing just 132 (just 10 yards rushing). Louwagie finished 6-of-12 passing for 135 yards and two interceptions. Woodford had three catches for 67 yards, Carter Guetter added two catches for 54 yards and Kyle Huhnerkoch had one catch for 14 yards. Prouty finished with 11 carries for 57 yards and two scores and Adam Bommersbach had 10 carries for 46 yards.
The Cardinal defense was led by Corbin Wabasha with eight tackles (four solo) and two tackles-for-loss, Huhnerkoch added seven tackles (three solo) and a tackle-for-loss and Josephson had six tackles (three solo) and a tackle-for-loss. Carter Johnson added four tackles and an interception, Bommersbach had four tackles and a tackle-for-loss and Woodford added two solo tackles and an interception (his seventh of the season). Chad Maddock and Brennan Sander both had interceptions as well in the victory.
