Redwood Valley competitive in 3-2 loss to unbeaten Jackson Co. Central

It was a battle til the very end but the unbeaten Jackson Co. Central Huskies would rally to top host Redwood Valley 3-2 Thursday night in a Big South Conference (West) girls volleyball showdown.

The Cardinals (3-2) came out and set the tone immediately in game one, rolling to a 25-10 win to go up 1-0. The Huskies (6-0) meanwhile would get right back in the match with an impressive game two in which they would roll to a 25-12 win to tie the match up at one apiece.

In set three, the Cardinals trailed 20-16 but would rally to take the game 25-22 to go up 2-1 in the match.

Game four looked like it might go the way of the Cards but the veteran Huskies would rally from down 19-16 to claim a 25-20 win and send it to a fifth and deciding game. In game five, the Huskies would use the momentum from game four to race out to an 8-0 lead and would go on to win the fifth set 15-6 to close out the match.

“We are working hard and when we controlled the ball were very good tonight,” Coach Andy Regnier said, “They are a solid team with explosive players but we’re making progress every day and showed our potential last night.”

The Cards showed nice balance statistically with Kate Ahrens and Haley Garman both finishind with seven kills. Sydney Sommers added six kills, Ashley Wollin had three and Bri Panitzke two.

The sophomore tandem of Aubree Hicks and Hannah Schjenken both finished with 11 set assists.

Amy Martius was 14-of-15 serving with three aces, Jenna Pendleton was 12-of-14 serving with an ace and Sommers added a pair of ace serves. Sommers led the way with a team-high 17 digs, Ahrens added 11, Schjenken had seven and Hicks, Martius and Wollin all finished with six.

The Cardinals take part in the Wabasso Tournament on Saturday and travel to Pipestone Area Tuesday night for another tough conference match-up. It’s early, but the Section 3AA-South bracket could be shaping up to be an interesting one with Jackson Co. Central, Marshall (7-2), Pipestone Area (7-3) and Redwood Valley (3-2) all with the potential to come out on top. Paynesville Area (10-4), Morris Area/CA (7-3), Eden Valley-Watkins (6-3) and Litchfield (6-5) are the teams to beat in the North half.
