A unique attraction is being presented this year at the Redwood County Fair.

Maxwell Kelsey, artist, furniture maker and canoe carver from Bemidji, is going to be at the fair carving a canoe right before the eyes of attendees.

Known around the world for his hand-crafted, traditional Lacrosse sticks, Kelsey will be taking a basswood tree and making a canoe – finishing the work of art during the fair.

Sponsored by the Redwood Falls Library, the Redwood County Fair Board, the Redwood Area Library Foundation, the Friends of the Redwood Falls Library, Redwood Lodge, the Redwood Falls Rotary Club and the Redwood Falls Lions Club, Kelsey will demonstrate his skills for the public at the fair.

According to Teri Smith, Redwood Falls Public Library director, bringing Kelsey to Redwood Falls fits in with the library’s summer reading program theme “Reading Takes You Everywhere.”

Kelsey arrived earlier this week and has already started working on the canoe.

All are encouraged to stop by the fair and watch Kelsey as he demonstrates his wood carving skills.
