Wabasso softball team earns runner-up Section finish
With a single run in the bottom of the sixth the Edgerton/SWC Flying Dutchmen held off a scrappy Wabasso squad 4-3 Thursday afternoon in the Section 3A softball championship held in Cottonwood.
The Rabbits (13-11) took a 2-1 lead early on, as Halle Huhnerkoch and Emily Benz picked up RBI singles.
The Flying Dutchmen reclaimed the lead on a two-run home run off the bat of Jazzy Prins, but the Rabbits would tie things up on an RBI single from Megan Rothmeier.
Edgerton/SWC – the Class A state champs in 2016 – then plated a run in the bottom of the sixth and held on from there for the win.
Despite the loss, it was a nice postseason run for the Rabbits who saved their best effort for the postseason.
Benz would take the loss, allowing four earned runs on nine hits, striking out two. Rothmeier was 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Allison Fenger, Cassidy Irlbeck, Jenna Frank, Cora Eichten, Benz and Huhnerkoch all had hits.
Wednesday night the Rabbits advanced into the Section 3A title game with a 2-1 win over LQPV. Benz struck out three and kept the Eagle hitters at bay with just five scattered hits to earn the victory on the hill. T
he game was tied at one heading into the seventh when Rothmeier and Madeline Hanna both reached on singles. A grounder from Huhnerkoch would score Rothmeier with what ended up being the game winning run.
The Eagles threatened in the bottom of the frame, advancing a runner all the way to third before Benz was able to wiggle out of the jam and end the game.
Sarah Franta picked up an RBI single Irlbeck added a hit.
