To say that Ernie Frederiksen was patriotic would be an understatement.

The Redwood Falls resident, who passed away in 2017, proudly raised his flag every morning and lowered it every night.

“You learned patriotism from him without knowing you were learning,” said Scott Karpen.

Karpen talked about Frederiksen, a fellow member of Sons of the American Legion Squadron 38 of Redwood Falls May 2 during the Redwood Area Education Foundation Evening of the Stars event.

Karpen was on hand to announce the recipient of the annual scholarship presented by the local Sons of the American Legion.

However, Karpen added moving forward the scholarship will be named in the honor of this true patriot. In the future it will be known as the Ernie Frederiksen Memorial Patriotism Scholarship.

The scholarship, which is presented based on an essay written about the meaning of patriotism, honors Frederiksen who demonstrated his patriotism in many ways.

Frederiksen was a charter member of the Sons of the American Legion in Redwood Falls. He also demonstrated a commitment to his community and its youth through his volunteer service for numerous organizations.

“Ernie proudly presented this scholarship to many deserving young adults for many years,” said Karpen. “When I moved to town six years ago and he asked me to join him, I gladly accepted the opportunity to stand next to him.”

This years recipient of the Ernie Frederiksen Memorial Patriotism Scholarship in the amount of $500 is Miranda Krinke. This scholarship was one of many presented May 2t to members of the Redwood Valley High School Class of 2018.
