In a match that went right down to the wire, the YME Sting managed to hold off host Redwood Valley 4-3 Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference boys tennis match-up held at the RACC.
The Cardinals (0-3) swept all three doubles matches, but the Sting countered by winning all four singles matches to earn the win.
The match of the afternoon came at third singles where the Cards’ Jacob Zollner got into a dogfight with the Sting’s Ean Clarke. Zollner dropped the first set 7-5 but would rally to take set number two 6-3. In the tiebreaker, Zollner fell behind 9-3 but would rally to within a point at 11-10 before falling 13-11.
Seventh-grader Andrew Muetzel also lost a tough battle at second singles as he fell 7-5, 6-4.
In doubles action, the Cards first team duo of Cameran Sommers and Brian Bucholz rolled to a straight set 6-4, 6-2 win. At second doubles, the duo of Xander Seaman and Payton Nelson claimed a 6-3, 6-4 win, and the third doubles tandem of Josiah Hultquist and Conner Thordsen earned a 6-0, 6-4 victory.
Ben Collins fell 6-4, 6-0 at first singles.
