Darlene Schjenken Johnson, 83, formerly of Sacred Heart, died Monday, March 19, 2018, at Heritage Pointe Senior Living in Marshall. Her celebration of life will be at 11 am, Saturday, March 24 at Grace Lutheran Church in Belview. Visitation is one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Belview Cemetery following the service. Darlene Alberta Johnson was born August 11, 1934, to Anton and Mathilda (Helgeson) Schjenken in Kintire Township, Redwood Falls. Her parents moved to rural Sacred Heart where Darlene graduated from high school in 1952. Darlene married Vernon C. Johnson March 18, 1954. To this union three children were born. She worked at Warners Manufacturing in Sacred Heart, Ben Franklin in Montevideo and Granite Falls; and Jackpot Junction in Redwood Falls. She and a neighbor also owned a quilt shop in Granite Falls. Darlene had many hobbies throughout her life, such as ceramics, crafting, Hardanger, sewing, cross stitch and genealogy. She has made many handmade quilts for family and friends. She enjoyed making lefse every Christmas and has taught her children and grandchildren the art. She also enjoyed making donuts and has sent many a bag home with family members. She loved horses, dogs, cats and bingo. Darlene is survived by her children, Valerie (Mark) Kingstrom of Sacred Heart and Dr. Scott (Mary) Johnson of Watertown, S.D.; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Mariette Schjenken and Beverly Schjenken and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Philip and Art; and son Brad.
