Altermatt third for Bobcats
It was an impressive weekend for Redwood-River Valley sophomore Kaleb Haase who went 4-2 to capture fifth place at 220 pounds at the Class AA State Wrestling Meet held at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Haase - who had rolled to the Section 3AA title a week earlier - opened up his first trip to state with a fall in 2:13 (using a cradle) over Blaine Bauman of Orono to move into the quarterfinals. There, he met up with third-ranked Sam Wamre of UCBB (37-6) and would lose a tough 4-3 decision to drop into the wrestlebacks.
In his first consolation round match he would win by fall over Craig Santerna of Milaca-Faith Christian and then gutted out a 1-0 decision over Carson Huls of Pierz. With a chance to wrestle for third, he would fall 4-2 to eventual third-place winner Nate Schutz of Totino-Grace to set up a rematch with Wamre for fifth place. This time, Haase would rally from down 2-0 to post a 6-2 win to earn a medal in his first experience at the State Meet.
“Kaleb really wrestled well all weekend,” Coach Paul Carlson said, “He never changed up the style of wrestling that got him there and didn’t back down to anybody.”
Haase capped off the season with a mark of 41-9 and is on pace to surpass 125 career victories.
Standout Daniel Kerkvliet of Simley (49-1) won by fall in all of his matches to earn the title at 220.
Sophomore Chad Maddock (31-12) also competed in his first State Meet but had the unfortunate draw of eventual State Champion Zachary Jakes of MAWE (41-0) in his preliminary match and would lose by fall. In the wrestlebacks, he would lose by fall to Dustin Portales of FEFA.
With a 3-1 win over Colton Waldvogel of Osakis, Wabasso senior Nick Altermatt earned a third place finish at 170 pounds Saturday at the Class A State Wrestling Meet.
Altermatt entered the tournament with a mark of 35-1, earning the Section 3AA title with a win over Jaden Kindropp of Canby in the championship match. At State, Altermatt earned a second period fall over Tim Lewis in the preliminaries and won by injury default (he was leading 6-0 at the time) over Joe Dezelar of BGM in the quarterfinals to cruise into the semifinals. There, he met up with a familiar foe in Kindropp - a 3-2 winner over Dalton Mielke of RCB in the quarterfinals - with a chance to reach the title match. Unfortunately, Altermatt would fall 4-2 and Kindropp would go on to win the State championship with a 2-1 win over Levi Larkin (who had upset Waldvogel 3-2).
Altermatt would top Kaleb O’Reilly of Goodhue 2-1 to reach the third place match where he topped Waldvogel 3-1 in another close match.
Teammate Jared Schroepfer (32-5) fell 14-10 to Matt Ziebell in his opening round match and was eliminated after just one match when Ziebell lost in the quarters.
